Preparing for Adjustment of Status interview - May 2003, 2002

       Buried in paperwork...

GETTING READY
OK, here's everything we're taking to our Adjustment of Status interview on Monday, May 19 2003. We have photocopies of everything x3 as the interview letter says bring one copy for each applicant.

BASIC STUFF
1    The interview letters for myself and my two children.
2    Our passports containing K-1 and K-2 visas and I-94s.
3    Birth certificates.

4    The next thing they ask for is tricky - in addition to passports they want photo ID for each person. My EAD and/or English driving licence should suffice but what for the girls? Their school photograph that shows the whole class with names is the only thing I can think of that comes close... Here's hoping...

5    Proof of termination of previous marriages.
6    Approval notice for 129F
7    Medical supplements for each of us in sealed envelopes from Civil Surgeon.
The letter doesn't ask for fingerprint receipt etc - do I really need it? I'll take it anyway.

FINANCIAL STUFF
8    Affidavit of Support from Garth naming me and girls plus photocopies of it along with copies of all the other financial stuff for the girls' files.
9    Last 3 1040s and W2s.

Slight (read MAJOR!) worry here. We haven't received tax returns back from the IRS for 2002 yet. We filed down at the IRS service center at the Federal Building so at least we have a copy of what we filed stamped 'received' by the IRS. We hope that's enough. Someone else fell foul of that one so it's a worry but what can we do? I'm bringing receipts to prove we filed for ITINs for the three of us back in January and a repeat filing for my daughter LIzzy since she still hadn't received one in May - the reason we didn't file taxes as early as we could have. But we have the W-2 and proof of everything else so fingers crossed...

BUT (Why is there always another but?) Our latest tax return doesn't show the required $23,000 for a family of four, but we have proof we meet that in the form of:

10    Employer letter showing current salary;
11    Employment verification printout which shows he made 23,001.56 (PHEW!) in the last CALENDAR year;
12    Tax shelter statement showing same figure, again for the calendar, rather than financial, year..

Because of these problems we also have:

COSPONSOR AFFIDAVIT to be produced only if necessary.
It contains:
13    Affidavit of Support from Garth's dad;
14    Employer letter;
15    Last 3 1040s and W2s;
16    Notarised copies of his birth cert and passport along with originals (the originals are possibly overkill but I don't know).

PROOF OF VALID MARRIAGE
17    Colour photocopies of wedding pix.
18    Postmarked letters sent to us as a family.
19    Notarised letter from Garth's dad.
20    Notarised letter from a Prof where Garth works who knows us as a family.
21    Letter from the minister who married us who also knows us as a family.
22    Health Benefits statement showing we're all covered under Garth's plan.
23    Apartment lease contracts naming us together for both places we've lived since we were married.
24    Credit cards showing same account number for both of us.

We also filed 2002 tax jointly so that should count as proof of co-mingled finances too.

MISC.
25    I'm also bringing copies of the forms we mailed them when we changed address to prove we complied with the law as I'm next to certain those won't have caught up with our files yet.

26-673    OK and I admit it I also have copies of absolutely everything else I have on paper JUST IN CASE. Arrrrrrrrgh!!!
