How do I get started? | |||||||||
When you first get bitten by the astronomy bug, the first thing you should do is go to the library. Almost every public library has a great selection of books and guides perfect for people just starting out in amateur astronomy. Some of the best books are: "Nightwatch" by Terence Dickinson, noted astronomy author "The Backyard Astronomer's Guide" by the same Author (more advanced book, though) "Turn Left at Orion" By Brother Guy Consolmagno, an astronomer with the Vatican Observatory After reading some books, get a basic planesphere, or "star wheel". Take it out of town on a camping trip, away from the lights of the city. Use it to familiarize yourself with the positions of bright stars and the major constellations. Get to know the night sky on a more familiar level. First hand experience is the best thing. Third, and perhaps most importantly, join a local astronomy club. There you will learn from people with years (and perhaps lifetimes) of experience in astronomy under their belts. Go to public observing events (often called "Star Parties") and get to lok through a variety of different telescopes. |
