Plant Growth - Lesson 4

Lesson Objectives
In this lesson we are going to test leaves for the presence of starch using iodine.

Introduction.
Plants produce glucose by the process of photosynthesis. Glucose is a small sugar compound. The plant joins these glucose compounds together and this larger compound is called starch. Starch belongs to the family of compounds called carbohydrates.

Practical
Equipment : Iodine, Leaves, Rice and Potato

First show that Iodine changes colour in the presence of known sources of carbohydrate, potato, rice etc..
Boil the leaves first to break down the leaf cells. Add Iodine to the beaker to test for starch.
