Experiment #1 – Magnetic Balloon

Materials Needed:

·        Balloons

·        Head of hair

·        Packing Popcorn

·        Thread

·        Pins

·        Shelf or ledge to attach thread to

What to Do:

1.     Tie a piece of packing popcorn to a piece of thread.

2.     Tape the thread to a table.

3.     Blow up the balloon and tie it

4.     Rub the balloon on your head for 30 sec.

5.     Put the balloon close to the packing popcorn.

6.     What happens?

Experiment #2 – Circuits

Materials Needed

·        Wire

·        Light bulb (from flashlight)

·        Batteries

·        Duct Tape

·        Various materials to check conductivity

What to Do:

1.     Tape a piece of wire to the positive (+) end of the battery and tape another piece of wire to the negative end of the battery.

2.     Tape the wire from the Positive end to the metal part of the bulb right under the glass

3.     Tape a third wire to the metal bottom of the bulb

4.     Touch the wires together and the bulb should light up.

5.     Now try placing the wires on different parts of objects to see if the light will still shine.

6.     What objects let the electricity flow through so the light could shine?

7.

Experiment #3 – Lemon Battery

Materials Needed:

·        2 lemons

·        wire

·        copper pennies

·        paper clips

·        battery operated digital clock

What to Do:

1. Check with a grown-up before you begin.
2. First, attach one of the paperclips to a wire.
3. Then attach a penny to a second wire.
4. Attach another penny to one end of the third wire, and a paperclip to the other end.

5. Squeeze and roll two lemons to loosen the pulp inside.
6. Make two small cuts in the skins of both lemons an inch or so apart.
7. Put the paper clip that is attached to the wire and the penny into one of the cuts until you get to the juicy part of the lemon.
8. Stick the penny into a hole in the other lemon.
9. Put the other paper clip into the second hole of the lemon with the penny.
10. Then put the last penny into the last open hole.

11. Connect the free ends of the wires to the terminals of the digital clock.

12. Watch how the lemons make enough electricity to turn the clock on. If you've hooked everything up and the clock isn't running, try switching the wires.
