At somepoint in Year 8 – can’t remember when, my friend Ashren showed me a picture of Pikachu’s Ghost. She had stumbled across this website hosting fake cards and had decided to print them off to show the rest of the Lunch Gang. Prior to this, I had invented a Pokemon called Deakon, based off Charmander and its evolutions. Deakon was a purple Psychic/Dragon Pokemon with puny wings – its second stage, Daykon would have larger wings capable of short periods of flight and its third stage, Daykos would have fully developed wings.
After looking at Pikachu’s Ghost, I began to think about making a Ghost of Deakon. I went home and started to develop a Ghost Pokemon that would soon become Deaky.
From the very beginning, Deaky was armed with a move called Psyshock, comandeerred off Abra’s jungle edition card. It was originally a move called down from thunderclouds, looking like white lightning. This later turned into an attack similar to Pikachu’s Thundershock. It is now a Ghost/Psychic move which acts like a Thundershock only on the mind and is triggered by an Electric attack but like any other attack can be invoked naturally.
It was decided that Deakon drowned in a whirlpool but after the introduction of the Team Rocket Deck and Dark Pokemon I came across a Dark Vaporeon and its Whirlpool move. Thus, the ordinary whirlpool Deakon drowned in morphed into Dark Vaporeon’s Whirpool, although the reason why it was there or if it intended to attack Deakon was never specified until much later. For while, Deaky remained without a proper backstory. She died off the Coast of Seafoam Island and would attack Ash and company when they stopped there. It is in this period that I call her Pre-Bow Deaky as both her story and her appearance was undeveloped and going through changes.
It was an episode of Pokemon that inspired the Bow. Ash and co were attending a Pokemon Beauty Contest of sorts, Misty had her Psyduck, Brock had his Vulpix and Team Rocket’s Ekans and Koffing had evolved into Arbok and Weezing. They had also encountered a Trainer with a Raichu. At the beginning of the episode (if my memory serves me correctly), the gang stop at an old woman’s house for a bite to eat (although I could be making this up). It is here that Deaky gets her Bow. The old woman ambushes the Ghost Pokemon and secures the Bow around her neck. The old woman think is suits Deaky and makes her look cute. She explains by observing Deaky’s movements, she can tell that the Ghost/Psychic Pokemon expends more energy in her attacks, particularly her Psyshock, than is neccesary and the Bow will absorb the extra energy for later use. The furious Deaky finds that she can’t remove it and that she’ll be “cursed with this thing for death!”. The Bow however, greatly improves her Psyshock attack – it lasts much longer than it did before the Bow era.
Digimon hit the UK. It wasn’t until Myotismon appeared that myself and my brother, dumped Deaky, Meowth and his talking Abra into the DigiWorld. And it wasn’t until the Myotismon saga that I actually sat down and thought about Deaky’s past. And it had to be a tragic one as the other Digimon began to suffer nightmares, in which they were Deaky. So it finally came to light, that Deaky at a young age had lost her parents to an extremely powerful, Dark/Psychic Pokemon. Scarred for life, she acted apathetic to other Pokemon and her Trainers, attacking other Pokemon visciously and without mercy and refusing to obey her Trainers even after she'd won the fight. It was this attitude that frightened her Trainers. She went through 5 masters before she couldn't take the hurt of abandonment any longer. The concept of her going out for a swim and getting caught in a whirlpool had changed at this point. The main idea was the same but the reasons behind it were different. It was now revealed that she planned to commit suicide but in the face of her impending death, she realised that death was not the answer. By this time it was too late.
The motivation behind the Dark Vaporeon's attack are yet to be determined. So far, a few possibilities are still around. One reason is that the Dark Vaporeon, having being let out by its Team Rocket Trainer, was trying out its newly learned Whirlpool move or was trying to master/control it and Deakon just happened to be swimming in the same area. Another idea is the same but with the Dark Vaporeon spotting Deakon and purposefully utilizing its attack.
The outcome is still the same - Deakon dies and becomes the Ghost/Psychic Pokemon Deaky. She then exacts her revenge on Dark Vaporeon by obliterating it with her mind-blowing Psyshock.
Deaky is a lively, charismatic individual. Still haunted by her early years, she tries her hardest to live in the present and not in the past. She is infamous for her short and ferocious temper and tends to "lose it" when she's mad. It's not a good idea to get her angry or psychic sparks will fly!
