Riot At Bristol County Jail - D.H.O.C.
Yesterday, Easter Sunday, several hundred inmates at the Bristol County House of Correction facility in North Dartmouth started a riot at approximately 3:15 PM. Just after shift change, inmates not only caused a great amount of damage to all four outside units, shop areas, security cameras and other areas of the facility but also attacked and caused serious harm to officers. In a cowardly display, inmates attacked staff members and destroyed every window, camera and anything else not nailed down before the situation was brought under control. The rampage was well under control after about one hour from the start as local police departments, State DOC and the State Police along with B.C.S.O. D.M.T. teams gained the upper hand on the opportunists.
Not being on duty and visiting family I was unaware of the incident until late evening. My thoughts turned grave as I witnessed the damage and heard of injured officers on the nightly news. I wish a speedy recovery to all those injured and hope they all make a full recovery. Returning to work on Monday and trying to get a full picture of what transpired was pretty much on everyone's mind. The outside units, as seen on the newscasts, appeared like a ghost town. Pictures of HA unit from above and a shot of one of the control panels from one of the H's showed a small amount of the damaged caused.
Just under 300 inmates were shipped to other facilities while the units go under repair. No timeframe has been set for the completion of the restoration. We all hope some changes come about from this riot and improve on the less than perfect design of the jail. Although some newspapers report the jail to be either fourteen or three years old the facility is actually eleven.
An above shot of HA shows the broken windows and debris scattered
all over the main courtyard. Another picture show the damaged done to one of the control panels in the H's. These panels control the doors for the unit.
All the staff members, officers and support, worked together as a team to regain control of the institution and prevent further injury to their brother and sister officers. My congratulations to all for being the professionals I know they are and always will be. I tip my hat to the so called "rookies" on second shift.
