Skills
· I have a broad, in depth knowledge of the marine environment,
mainly from the point of view of biology but also physical and chemical
processes. I have practical experience of taking environmental measurements
in the field in a variety of situations.
· From my graduate and post-graduate studies I have developed
a detailed understanding of the conflicting nature of many coastal uses
and the policies and laws associated with these conflicts, including California
state legislation.
· I have become familiar with the methods of resolving such conflicts
from local to international levels through stakeholder participation,
public meetings and policy analysis.
· I am able to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally.
I can produce reports to a high standard for both professionals and laymen.
I am a confident and enthusiastic public speaker with experience in the
preparation of presentations. I have been interviewed (both pre recorded
and live) about water quality regulations on radio.
· I have provided training on specific policies to technical staff
on a one to one basis and given instruction in the use of computers and
SCUBA equipment on a group basis.
· I have experience in computer construction and software installation.
I have used a wide range of standard software (including Office 2000,
Paint Shop Pro, AutoCAD Lt.) and have the ability to learn complex software.
I have constructed internet pages using HTML language.
Experience and Aims
My university career has been undertaken with the aim of working in the
environmental policy field to interpret those policies in a way which
is effective and relevant to the community.
Heal the Bay - Summer 2001
For my master's thesis I worked with two Non Government Organisations,
Heal the Bay in the USA and the Marine Conservation Society in the UK.
While working as an intern for two months in Heal the Bay I concentrated
on an analysis of the State Implementation Policy of the California Toxics
Rule. I worked on technical details of the ability of analytical techniques
to detect chemicals at low concentrations in discharges. I identified
areas where improvements could be made and I produced a white paper for
Heal the Bay as a framework for future action.
Marine Conservation Society - Spring 2001
In the MCS I developed a general review of hazardous chemical regulations
at a national and international level. This document is currently under
peer review prior to publication. I also produced a number of fact sheets
on chemical, bacteriological, oil and radioactive pollution as well as
European pollution directives aimed at the high school age range.
I also assisted in the launch of the MCS Good Beach Guide including live
and pre recorded radio interviews and debates on bacterial pollution and
public health issues.
Hyder Consulting - Summer 1998
During 1998 I worked as an assistant marine scientist with Hyder Environmental
Consulting. Among other projects, I was involved in epidemiological studies
for the distribution of bacterial spores from sewage works and the plumes
of river discharges into the sea.
Brecknock Wildlife Trust
I have worked on a voluntary basis for the Brecknock Wildlife Trust undertaking
nature reserve repair and management, including implementing Biodiversity
Action Plans. I have led Trust events and provided computer assistance
in the preparation of funding applications.
Personal interests
I have travelled extensively, mainly within Europe but also Worldwide.
I enjoy experiencing different countries and cultures, and I find communities
where an integration of a number of cultures has occurred are particularly
interesting.
