UPT Phase II Pictures | |
Brockshus, Quam, and Pfeiffer relax at Harvey's after a long week on the flight line. |
Bourbon Street in New Orleans the night before the Packers/Saints game. The packer fans were out in force. |
|
|
![]() These were some of the Packer fans that came along from the base. They were very much for the Packers and very Mississippi. We had a lot of fun with them. |
![]() Carrie and I painting the solo tub. Notice the film of paint and stagnant water on the surface. This is where our classmates toss us after our initial solo. |
|
|
![]() All finished! Class 03-13, Thunderbolts. |
![]() Jokhy posing by his aircraft of choice. |

Sam and Rocky posing with their new toy. Gotta keep the 'kids' happy. |
Quam getting thrown in the dunk tank by Randall, Jokhy, and Parker. Quam and Jokhy were the first to solo. |
Jamie and Mike Jokhy at a local catfish restaurant celebrating Gary Frisard's 29th birthday. |
Quam and Jokhy waiting for Ficklin and I to return from our solo flights. The dunk tank is in the background. |
Here I am after taking a swim in the tank. My initial solo was October 29th. |
O'Donnell posing by a C-130 from Little Rock, our home-to-be in about 10 months. O'Donnell, Quam, Randall, Bandy, and I (and probably a few others) will all be training in C-130s after UPT. |
A group of students drooling over the A-10 on "career day." There were many aircraft on display, including F-15s and F-16s (fighters), a C-17 and C-130 (cargo), and a KC-135 (refueler). |
If "happiness" could be described by a picture... Quam and Brockshus were having the time of their lives sitting in the cockpit of the KC-135. Quam is Guard and will fly this aircraft, and Brockshus' dad flew them during his Air Force career, so Adam hopes to follow in his footsteps. |
Pfeiffer... |
... and Quam showing off their endurance after a beer each at Pfeiffer's place following a long week of flying. |
Carrie reading poetry at our solo party. We each got a turn to take a shot at our IPs. |
Captain Zihmer, our flight commander, in one of his (not so) finer moments. The night was still young at this point. |
|
Captain Alley, after having served his FAIP term of three years, gets his send-off (soaked with fire extinguishers and buckets of icewater) after his final flight in a T-37. C-130s in Little Rock are next for him. |
"Taking our weapon-system into action" during our cross-country. I'm pretty sure this was Meridian, MS. |
![]() Quam and Lt. Gurry pulling into Meridian following their first leg of flying. |
![]() Majors Coon and Rose, Lt. Gurry, Parker, and Quam at the oyster bar in New Orleans. |
![]() We were leaving our mark on the world during our drive from Keesler to Gulfport (note the 03-13 sticker on the drive-through). |
![]() This is the helmet we wear during the T-37 phase. Many students have their class patch sewn onto the leather visor-cover. |
![]() These are our parachutes. The silver 'key' and the red hook on the left shoulder harness both serve to open the parachute automatically during an ejection. |
This is Captain McBroom, my assigned IP until late in the program. Prior to the T-37, he flew F-4s and F-15Cs and was one of the few fighter guys in our squadron. |
This is the scheduling board in our flight room. There are three potential periods each day (three columns), and name pucks for all the students and IPs. It changed frequently, and we were often told to stop "watching TV" as the IPs made changes. |
This is perhaps the most beautiful sight you'll see in five months in T-37s... a flow chart that has everything highlighted with corresponding dates. What a feeling! |
Here is the Senior Ranking Officer (SRO) for our flight, Jeff Randall, who I am told I do not have nearly enough pictures of. He is a fixed-wing qualification student (former helo-pilot), so he came to training with his wings. He was given fewer rides in the T-37 than the rest of us, but will go through the normal T-1 syllabus. |
Jokhy and I got to pull one last tour in the RSU Wednesday before track select. You can see a T-37 landing. |
Each class sets up a display outside their flight room to show family and friends all the cool stuff we get to use throughout the program. |
My dad, step mom, sister, and her boyfriend came down to visit Heidi and I for track select. |
Here is the whole gang posing after our last "formal brief" in Tweets. Our families got to attend to see how the process worked. |
My sister Julie, her boyfriend David, and Heidi checking things out. |
Quam and I after surviving AMS and six months of UPT together. We, and many others from my class, are heading to T-1s. |
Just for comparison, here is the T-37 cockpit, . . . |
. . . the T-38C cockpit, . . . |
. . . and the T-1 cockpit (modeled by Jamie and Heidi). |
Here was Major Nell's parting gift to Parker. The final product used sticky pads and velcro instead of nuts and bolts, as the original design called for. |
Major Nell, the recipient of our "Favorite IP" award, stops to pay Pfeiffer a visit at our dinner at J.Broussard's following track select. Major Nell's favorite past-time was giving grief alternately to Pfeiffer and Parker. |
Lt Gurry and Ficklin posing at J. Broussard's. Ficklin wore that smile all night long after getting a T-38 during track select. After a rough start in T-37s, he kept his chin up and finished strong. |
