Michael
Decker, President of Decker Tool
Rental, learned at an early age from his father that success only
comes from hard work. He saw
his father climb from the mailroom to an executive office at New York
Life. Michael Decker started
modestly as well, getting a job grilling hamburgers at age 15 at
Emilia’s Restaurant, in Thornwood, New York.
He imitated his father’s ambition, and only a year later began
his tool rental career at Handy Rent All, where he gained 12 years of
industry experience.
He
has now practiced his father’s strong work ethic for over 30 years in
the tool rental business. His
dedication has paid off with the success of Decker Tool Rental, which he
founded on April 15, 1983. The
company is a leading provider of construction and homeowner/Do-It-Yourself
(DIY) equipment rentals to small contractors, landscapers and homeowners
from Westchester County, New York.

Service by Focusing on the Basics
Since
founding the company nearly 20 years ago, Decker Tool Rental has focused
on one basic principle: customer satisfaction.
To accomplish this, Mr. Decker concentrates on equipment
maintenance and customer service.
“We
provide a more personalized service, a clean operation and proper
inventory maintenance,” quotes Michael Decker.
Decker
understands that clients expect reliable equipment.
To satisfy this need well trained staff members follow a strict
equipment maintenance protocol, after each rental, to meticulously
inspect, clean, repair and prepare the machinery.
At
Decker Tool Rental, customer service is of primary importance.
An expert staff member guides clients through the purchasing
process to be assured that the client is renting the proper piece of
equipment for their specific project.
Before all customers leave the store, employees give equipment
demonstrations, to teach safety and proper use.
By
providing excellent equipment and quality service, Decker Tool Rental has
gained a loyal customer base, consisting of small contractors, landscapers
and local homeowners.
Motivated
by His Family
Even
though Michael Decker works many hours, his family is still his top
priority. Decker’s main
motivation is to provide a comfortable lifestyle for his wife Patti,
daughter Nicole, and three sons, Michael, Sean and Scott.
In order to support his family, Decker worked every day of the
week, from 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM, during the store’s first fifteen years.
During his first year of business, he only took two vacation days,
on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
“Because
of my schedule, I missed the first ten years of Michael Junior’s
life,” Decker reminisces. But
now that Michael Jr. is one of Decker Tool Rental’s eight employees, the
business has brought the two of them even closer together.
A
Role Model to Entrepreneurs
Founded
on April 15, 1983, Decker Tool Rental increased profits 25 percent per
year for the first 10 years. In
1985, the company opened its second location in Bedford Hills, NY.
Ken Jasilli, Michael Decker’s long-time friend, manages that
operation. The American Rental
Association recognized Decker Tool Rental in 1995 for Neatness of
Location. Mr. Decker has
assisted two local businesses, Liller Bobcat Service in 1986 and Pro Am
Tool in 1998 with equipment, finances, and entrepreneurial advice.
