Game 2 Rewind
By: David Pollak and Victor Chi

MVP

Sharks C Vincent Damphousse. He produced a second- period goal that got the Sharks rolling after Colorado took an early 1-0 lead, an assist on the go-ahead goal and the strong overall play that Coach Ron Wilson said is the best he has seen from the veteran.

Rough night

Colorado C Joe Sakic. His frustration showed when he was sent to the penalty box for boarding Todd Harvey at 5:15 of the third period, a call that led to the Sharks' third goal. It only got worse about eight minutes later when he had the puck on his stick just to the right of San Jose's net and could not beat an out-of-position goaltender Evgeni Nabokov.

Unsung hero

Sharks D Mike Rathje. The Sharks were trailing 1-0 when Colorado's Alex Tanguay picked up a loose puck at the Sharks' blue line and moved in Nabokov's direction. Before Tanguay could decide whether to shoot or pass, Rathje eliminated either option by tying him up and planting him into the end boards. It was one of many solid defensive plays.

Turning point

19:36 of second period. Teams never want to get scored on in the final minute of a period. The Sharks' Patrick Marleau, parked all alone in front of the Colorado net, broke a 1-1 tie and much of the Avalanche's spirit with a goal that was equal parts skill and patience.

Highlight reel

Sharks RW Jonathan Cheechoo's goal. You almost need slow motion to appreciate how Moose Factory's favorite son dragged his stick behind him, took a pass from Brad Stuart between his skates and left Colorado goaltender David Aebischer wondering how the puck got past him.

Stat sheet

Most ice time: Sharks D Scott Hannan, 26:15

Shots leader: Damphousse and Colorado LW Steve Konawalchuk tied with six apiece.

Faceoff proficiency: Sakic won 17 of 25 draws.

Three stars

1. Patrick Marleau: Sharks captain set up Vincent Damphousse on the power play for their first goal, then netted what proved to be the winner.

2. Niko Dimirakos: Sharks rookie recorded two assists and is expected to be credited with a third after league officials inspect the video.

3. Scott Hannan: Sharks defenseman continues to gobble up minutes while keeping Colorado off the board.
