The Queensland Electric Wheelchair Sports Association is an organisation dedicated to give people in an electric wheelchair the opportunity to participate in team sport.
Electric wheelchair sports have been played on and off in Brisbane since about 1986 when the Queensland was invited to send a team to Melbourne for the first ever National Electric Wheelchair Sports (NEWS). The sports played at this tournament were Hockey and Slalom.
From this stage, hockey was played on a weeknight every couple of weeks in the hall at "Montrose". This continued on and off until in about 1990, when a number of players who had attended the annual NEWS decided to get together every fortnight to play a couple of games. At this stage, Touch Football which is based on the sport of Rugby League was introduced. Within a year or two, this group of players was also playing the sport of Balloon Soccer. In about 1992, the newly named "Push ‘n’ Power Wheelchair Sports" had formed a committee to run the sports.
This went well until about 1995 when it was disbanded and the Queensland Electric Wheelchair Sports Association was formed. In 1996, 3 teams were established, which were North, South and Central. In no time, the players had renamed their teams, the Vikings, Rhinos and Hornets and were involved in 3 separate seasons of Electric Wheelchair Hockey, Rugby League and Balloon Soccer.
