Historical sketch:  Union artillery opened up on CSA lines near the foot of Culp's Hill early on the morning of July 3rd, 1863 prior to dawn. CSA generals shifted their lines somewhat to avoid the shells. Reb skirmishers on Taney Farm across Rock Creek kept up a steady flanking fire on Colgrove's right flank regiment (13th NJ) until Winegar's artillery drove them back. Divisional commander Ruger ordered Colgrove to attack. The 27th IN and the 2nd MA advanced across Spangler's Meadow and were crushed by Rebel fire. Up on Culp's Hill itself, 1 regiment from Candy's Brigade under Lt. Col. Pardee advanced to a stone wall in a field he later named for himself and poured flanking fire into advancing Rebs under Walker and later O'Neal, prior to Steuart's Brigade finally pushing the Pennsylvanians back. Lockwood rushed forward the 1st MD ES to drive off the Rebels, supported in time by Shaler's Brigade in reserve, and by flanking artillery and infantry fire. The Confederate attack ran out of fresh troops, and the Southerners withdrew by 11:30 east of Rock Creek, leaving all of Culp's Hill in Union hands, and spare troops could be shifted to the Union center to help shore up Hancock's II Corps when Pickett attacked that afternoon.
Table set-up:  Use  a 3'x4' tabletop. Culp's Hill is covered with trees and rocks. Rock Creek is fordable as rough terrain, small stream costs 1" of movement, as do walls.
