Sudanese Canadian Peace and Development Network

The Sudanese Canadian for Peace and Development Network is an organization that is a not-for-profit humanitarian society. The purpose of this network is to create awareness of the situation in Sudan and to make strides in the direction of peace and development through cultural exchange, conferences, workshops and by fostering relationships with and between governmental, non-governmental, and humanitarian agencies. Our goal is to promote peace and harmony among the Sudanese people, Africa, and the world.

Some issues that the SCPDN is promoting awareness of are -
The economic and social development of an autonomous South Sudan. This requires new and creative ideas to foster sustainable development. This requires a devotion to education so that people in Sudan can gain an understanding of the market economy, and how they would like their country to operate in that environment.. The proper utilization of resources should be encouraged so that revenues accrued from these resources have an immediate and noticeable effect on the local economy and empower the people whose land has these resources. The goal of which is to keep foreign creditors and companies at bay until the country is self sufficient enough to decide how it will then move on economically. There is no reason why this country cannot maintain a self sufficient economy considering the huge resource wealth.
The necessity for the arts, free speech and expression. Only when citizens are actively involved and encouraged to make their thoughts and ideas known can there be true social development. The example of the healing sessions in post-apartheid South Africa, where people were encouraged to share their sadness in order to heal up emotional pain, helps us understand the importance of the freedom of expression. Only by uncovering past problems by bringing them out in the open, and providing an environment for new ideas can a fair and just society emerge.
The positive aspects of these will hopefully lead to a new understanding and co-operation between different groups that make up Sudan. By involving all sides in these talks the work can then commence on the necessary infrastructure to keep Sudan moving in a positive direction. Such an infrastructure is so multifaceted that the inclusion of people from all walks of life are of utmost importance. A social infrastructure of health care, education, food/water supply and waste disposal is paramount to Sudan. A respect for the commons will then emerge that will hopefully be an example to the emerging business infrastructure. Transportation and telecommunications are important but also important is that the business community ,both domestic and foreign, have a respect for the commons and an understanding of appropriate stewardship of the environment.
