5th South Carolina Reserves, Company B
York District
Charleston South Carolina. Oct 9th 1863
Lawson I now take the liberty of writing a few lines to you to let you know
that I am well at present except bad cold. Hoping when these few lines may come
to . . . that they may find you all enjoying good health. We have changed
quarters. We are in a splendid building with good rooms and fireplaces on
Society Street. Our company pressed the house . . . . . We are now drilling
about 3 hours a day. Some of our company is getting discharged. There is a good
many not well. I see but little sign of fighting here. Salt is worth here $25
per . . . .and a very hard matter to get it shipped. I have one bushel that
will be shipped in a few days. If you can get good onions at $8 or $10 per
bushel, I will risk shipping them here. They are worth here at least $20 per
bushel, though it will take 3 bus. good measure thereto . . . . make it here .
. . . .Tell Harriet I will write to her soon. I want to hear from you all.
Write soon. Yours as ever,
Wm.

Lawson I now take the liberty of writing a few lines to you to let you know
that I am well at present hoping when these few lines may come to hand that
they may reach and find you all enjoying the same blessing. I have had no
letter from home this week. Thursday is our day to get letters. We failed to
get mail yesterday; we may get our mail today. A. J. Martin loaned me $15 for
which I gave him a due bill to be paid in salt 25 lb if the salt which I have
bought goes to Yorkville safe. If it does not you will please pay him $15 and
.....the due bill.
Wm. Howell
