Yorkville Home Guards
Yorkville, York District
Organizational Meeting
As soon as Fort Sumter was fired upon, 12 April 1861, York District was astir
with men determined to enlist their services. Existing militia companies had
headed for Charleston. Every community was organizing a volunteer group for the
fight. Older men, even those with no previous military training, did not want
to be left out. They organized themselves into groups they generally called
"Home Guards."
The officers of the Yorkville Home Guards represented men of wealth and
prestige--court officials, academy heads, lawyers, a newspaper editor,
manufacturers, a doctor.
The company was then organized with the following members:
Asbury Coward, Captain
Dr. A. Barron, 1st Lieutenant
G. W. Williams, 2nd Lieutenant
J. G. Enloe, 3rd Lieutenant
J. C. Phillips, 1st Sergeant
J. R. Schorb, 2nd Sergeant
L. M. Grist, 3rd Sergeant
W. B. Wilson, 4th Sergeant
B. T. Wheeler, 5th Sergeant
J. B. Allison 1st Corporal
W. I. Clawson, 2nd Corporal
J. L. Miller, 3rd Corporal
J. C. Miller, 4th Corporal
