Felix
© Shannon Kalahan
Chestnut Thoroughbred gelding
1988

Originally, Felix was used in a hunter/jumper program, and as he slowly showed signs of lameness, he was moved into the role of "lesson horse".  When it became apparent that even the lesson program was too much for him, he was sold to an inexperienced horse person with instructions to give him 5 "vitamins" morning and evening.  Those vitamins were in fact Bute.

When a severe car accident left Felix's new owner unable to care for him, he was donated to SCR.  By the time we got him, he had Lyme disease, white line disease, bone spurs on his hocks, and had foundered several degrees in his right fore hoof (
more).

SCR did not want to see Felix suffer and hoped to treat his ailments, in hopes that he would heal and be able to live a normal life.

Felix was in SCR's care for over a year recovering from his cases of lyme, founder, and white line.  He is now sound, although some days are better than others for him...for that reason, SCR maintains that any potential adopters should ride mostly at the walk and trot - we would prefer he not be cantered extensively.  Also, his adoption agreement notes that he must be maintained on a joint supplement and remain enrolled in the PreventiCare program to ensure he stays healthy.  Finally, Felix would not be allowed to jump in his new home.

Felix found his forever home with the Wheeler family in November of 2004.  They had long anticipated his arrival back at the Ranch (he had been tried at another home, but was returned to SCR), and when the Wheelers finally met Felix, they fell in love.  We wish Felix and the Wheeler family the best of luck together.  We think you will do just fine together.
