Spotted Pony of the Americas (POA) mare 1982 Jessie is what we called a "lifer". The way most people saw it, she was an old pony mare that couldn't be ridden - she was just meant to keep other horses company. But, we were hopeful - Jessie has a sweet personality and we knew the right home was out there for her. We just had to find it. And finally, we think we have. Jessie was a companion horse here at SCR, and we wanted her continue on as a companion horse in her future "forever home". Just recently someone came to SCR looking for a companion to there 38 yr old mare. They wanted another horse there to keep the mare moving around and happy. So, we showed them Miss Jessie, and they fell in love. We explained Jessie's faults to them: Jessie had good ground manners, but needed a vet and farrier that would be patient with her. Furthermore, she has some "non-medicated" health issues that potential owners needed to be aware of - Jessie suffers from narcolepsy and has developed cataracts in her old age, though she gets along fine in spite of that. So far, Jessie seems to have settled in well. The old mare and Jessie, along with their old donkey, seem to be in love. We are told that the old mare even led Jessie, who's cataracts make seeing difficult, around the fence line of the paddock so that Jessie could learn them! We think Jessie's new home will be a good fit for her, and hope that all works out for the old mare. We love her and wish her the best. Good luck, old lady! |
