By the Bay - or Rio, as she is known around the barn - was a recent donation to SCR. She is trained in the English style, and is trained to jump. Seems it didn't take long for her sweet personality and athletic potential to charm people, as she found a new home within just months of arrival.
Rio was donated to SCR because she was diagnosed with "Equine Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy", or EPSM. In essence, EPSM involves accumulation of high muscle glycogen and abnormal polysaccharide levels in skeletal muscles, which causes horses diagnosed with EPSM to "tie up" easily. Fortunately, EPSM is highly manageable with a low carbohydrate, low starch, low sugar diet and a vitamin E supplement.
Rio has been placed at a home in New Hampshire where she will go into training. She is a great mare and we think she will enjoy her life at her new barn. We wish her and her new owner the best of luck.
