Sham was picked up in a local auction house.  An SCR board member and her volunteers were walking through the horse pens at the auction house and saw listless, sick, hungry horses.  Most of the animals were shy or aggressive, and seemed afraid to be touched.  Sham stuck out like a sore thumb.  He was sweet, and was willing to be pet as long as you had goodies for him to eat.

Our volunteers were saddened by the state of the horses at that auction house, and wanted to save at least one of them from their misery.  They spent some time with Sham, looking him over for health problems and testing his personality...after a half hour with the boy, the volunteers decided he was the one.  He stood a good chance of being adopted once he was in SCR's care.

SCR purchased Sham from the auction house, and transferred him into quarantine at their Enfield foster farm.  Sham had a bad case of skin fungus, was a cribber, and had been exposed to what looked like strangles at the auction house.  So, SCR cleaned his skin every day with a fungicide, bought him a cribbing strap, and had him vetted by Dr. Conserva, a local equine vet and good friend of the rescue.  After Sham's quarenteen ended, he was transferred to the main barn, and we began looking for a home for him.

Many people fell in love with Sham, admiring his good looks and quiet nature.  Eventually, he was adopted by one of SCR's board members and now lives at her barn in Monson, MA.  She has since changed his name to "Lakota", and has given him a quiet, relaxed life.  They are living happily together, and SCR wishes them the best of luck in the future.
