Saint Charles Borromeo is the patron of the Archdiocesan Seminary of Manila. The Karlista seminarian and priest strive to pattern his life according to the model of St. Charles Borromeo. As a Cardinal and Archbishop of Milan in Italy, he was a pioneer of the renewal of the clergy during a very difficult and crucial time for the Church. He was an exemplary pastor and shepherd to his flock dedicating himself to serving the Church with zeal and compassion for the poor and the needy.

He was known as a great reformer during the Council of Trent in 1562 enforcing significant changes in the Church including the establishment of seminaries as houses of formation for the aspirants to the priesthood. His motto in his coat of arms was "Humilitas" (Humility), a virtue each Karlista is called to imbibe in his life and ministry.

Service is the goal of our life and formation. Thus, we likewise pattern our ministry after the motto of the chief shepherd of the Archdiocese of Manila, Jaime Cardinal Sin: Serviam, "I shall serve". It is service for the sake of renewing the Church, bringing the message of Jesus to our world today, and inspiring the hearts of more men and women to offer their lives as a living testimony to the love of Christ.
