I’ve known you since you were 4 weeks old The little orange-collared puppy who yawned when we tickled you under your chin The children knew you were the one for them And home we brought you one fine Spring day Although you were to be a beauty, To the children you were a cutie, Whose name was Lucky, (After the 101 Dalmatian, you know) You grew to be a Lady Who was my greatest companion No matter what the day or hour You always had a smile for me And what a blessing that was to be To have you by my side Watching the children run and hide And following them everywhere One day they became teenagers And you no longer felt the need to follow them But still you were their favorite pillow With love and secrets to be shared Now we find our much loved companion Is gravely ill with only days to live Our hearts are breaking How appropriate that the leaves are falling We take our walks and stand in showers of red and yellow And as the bare branches point to the sky So my bare heart must let you fly. Good-bye my puppy. (I know you’re 8 years old, but like my children, You’ll always be young in my heart) |
