NOTE: I started writing this story before One Son was aired, so I know that it is slightly out-of-date.

Fox Mulder was sitting in his office, bored out of his mind. His partner, Scully, had caught the flu and was lying in bed at home. Right now, the only thing that kept him from falling asleep was the thought that the FBI couldn't shut the X-Files down again. Not after what Mulder and Scully had seen and proved, not after that horrible day when Scully was taken prisoner by those pieces of dirt above him.
But they still had no proof. No conclusive evidence to support their out of this world theories. But why did they need proof. He had never needed proof to know that there was something out there. Why should they. The ring of his phone interrupted Mulder's musing.

" Mulder."
" Agent Mulder, you're in trouble. The whole damn planets in trouble."
" Who is this?"
" An old friend, Mulder, an old friend!"
" What the hell are you on about?"
" Mulder, meet me in the restaurant across the road, NOW!"

With that, the mysterious caller hung up. Mulder rushed up the stairs of his basement office and ran to 'Smokey Joe's', the take out joint across the road. He sat down at a table and ordered a double bacon cheeseburger. Then he saw him. Emerging from the shadows was no other than his nemesis, Alex Krychek.

" Mulder, sit down, we need to talk!"
" You don't actually expect me to believe that crap, Krychek!"
" Listen, Mulder, this planet is in danger from aliens!"
" So, why are you telling me this?"
" 'Cause I wanna save my ass, there's a nice price on my head you know!"
" So why shouldn't I take you to your cigarette smoking friend and claim my cash reward?"
" Cut the crap, Mulder, there's no time to waste!"
" So, when are the aliens going to invade?"
" They already have. On the island of Kiribati, the aliens have set up a base where they have taken the bodies of the local people!"
" Why should I believe you Krychek, why shouldn't I think that this isn't just our government friends trying to kill me again!"
" Mulder, you know just as well as me that it was our government friends who put that bounty on my head. Look Mulder, you just gotta trust me on this one. I know we've had our differences before but this isn't about you hating my guts, it's about the safety of the whole planet!"
" Alright, Krychek, we got a deal! But if this turns out to be one of your pranks I'm gonna kick you ass so hard that you won't know your own name!"
" Deal, Fox. Can I call you Fox?"
" We're not on a first name basis, Alex! What the hell am I meant to do about this invasion?"
" Phone Scully, tell her to get down here!"
" Scully is sick!"
" Phone her Mulder!"

Mulder picked up his phone, for the second time in the last hour. It rang.

" Scully."
" Scully, it's me!"
" What the hell do you want Mulder!"
" Bet it was weird to hear those three words comin' from my mouth!"
" What are you on about?"
" You'd never guess who I ran into today."
" The Spice Girls?"
" Krychek."
" Mulder, you're not sitting in jail making your complimentary call are you?"
" Don't worry Scully, I didn't kill him! In fact, we had a chat."
"And?"
" And, the planet's in trouble from aliens!"
" Mulder, I got one question for you!"
" Shoot away!"
" Where did you dump the body!"
" Oh, Scully, that was so funny I forgot to laugh! Look, are you coming down here or not?"
" I'll be down in about twenty minutes, make sure the dirtbag doesn't do anything clever and Krychek-like!"

Mulder hung up the phone and told Krychek that Scully would be there in about a quarter of an hour.

" Look, Mulder, the aliens are tracking down all of their 'lab rats' and infecting them with a disease that will slowly mutate them into aliens!"
" How do you know this?"
" I have my friends in the syndicate!"
" Friends like Smokey Joe?"
" No!"

Then Scully arrived, early as usual and looked at Mulder with surprise when she saw his company.

" Mulder, I thought you were just joking!"
"I'm fine Scully, how are you! Sit down, please!" Mulder said. Scully sat down next to Mulder.
" Mulder, I didn't know that you spent your coffee breaks with lying pieces of scum!"
" I'll take that as a compliment!" Krychek said.
" Look, Mulder, I don't have time for this, what the hell is going on?" Before Scully could save more, she fainted. Mulder jumped up in shock and dialled 911 on his mobile.

Later, Mulder was waiting outside Scully's room in the hospital. Since the afternoon, she had gone in and out of a coma and the doctors were very worried. Mulder had a horrible feeling that Scully's cancer had come back with a vengeance. Alex Krychek walked through the hospital doors to see Mulder.

" Krychek, do you know if there's a cure for this disease?"
" No, Mulder, even those men behind this tragedy don't!"
" Listen to me Krychek, if I find out that you are lying I'm going to hunt you down like a dog and snap each individual bone in your body!"
" I'm not lying Mulder!"
" Look, whatever's wrong with Scully, I bet Spender knows the guy behind it! And I'm gonna take the piece of dirt down!"
" Look, Mulder, don't go doing anything you will regret!"
" I won't do anything to him 'till I get my proof, I'll get my butt kicked if I shoot a superior."
" What are you on about?"
" Somebody put Spender and Fowely in charge of the X-Files. Now we're just working for him."
" How 'bout I set it up so Spender has a little 'accident'?"
"That would be too easy. Look, you can't show your ass around here because there are people in this city who wanna kick it harder than I did!"
" I'm not scared of Skinner!"
" It's not Skinner you should be scared of, it's Cancer Man and his dirt eating son."
" Who's his son?"" You mean to say that you don't know. Well the correct answer is: Spender!"" Spender's Cancer Man's son!"
" Oh, crap!"
" What's up?"" I bumped into Spender earlier on today, I didn't think he knew who I was but when you put it like that, he was looking at me in a funny way!"
" Trouble just follows some people!"
" Look, Mulder, Scully's in big trouble now, and she needs you by herside. As long as you are with her they can't harm her!"
" What are you on about?"
" They may try and kidnap her, erase the evidence! That's how they play the game. They strategically position their pieces and when they are in a perfect position, checkmate!"
" What, you mean.? "
"Anybody in this hospital could be working for them, they have an agent in the FBI, no doubt. Probably Spender!"
" Krychek, what the hell is really going on?"
" They're preparing for an alien invasion of earth. The government has to have mutated all the population of this planet to guarantee their own safety, we're about to become extinct."
" And the aliens are using Kiribati as their base?"
" Precisely!" As Mulder was talking to Krychek, Scully's body was fighting a battle, to keep itself alive. Next to Scully, somebody, who was also in a coma, was lying in the hospital bed. The both shared the same vision. A vision of terror, it was a vision of the earth's future.
