The eXtremis X-files Fanfiction
[ The Wrong Side ]
“Mulder, what am I supposed to do with you? Your behaviour today was totally out of line, and yet somehow I’m always being called to explain why.” Scully surpassed him a look of disapproval, as she idly watched his figure hunched over a small mound of field notes which he had taken in the past week, totally absorbed into the latest case they had been working on together. Or so she thought. It seemed for the entire day Mulder had been flustered, always trying to hurry her up.

“No, Scully. That’s not the point!” He protested casually.

“And then the point is…I might add?” One look at Scully, and Mulder knew that arms folded, eyebrows raised, and the look that said it all, she meant business. So he had some explaining to do. Explanations he just didn’t have.

“The point is…well…I’m getting to it. Just trust me. I know what I’m doing.” He shrugged.

“Really?” Scully picked up her reports from her desk, slowly making her way to the door. “Well I can remember the last time you said that...”

“Hey well this time is different!” Mulder said in defence.

“Anyway, if you DO happen to come up with a conclusion as to your reasons with what happened today, you know where to reach me.” She said before slipping out the door.

As soon as the door was closed behind her, she let out a sigh of relief. No sooner had she done that, a muffled “I heard that Scully” from Mulder came through. She rolled her eyes at Mulder’s knack of observance and thumped the door with her palm, just to let him know that she had heard him.

It had been a long day at the office, and the last thing Scully wanted to even consider thinking about was this damn case that had Mulder so wound up. Just like many other cases before this one, the way she saw it was that there was no X-file to investigate. Sometimes it just wasn’t worth looking into. But no matter how much she protested, showing Mulder all the scientific facts and evidence, he would off handedly ignore her and continue insisting it was there until she went along with it.
Although she had to admit sometimes what had started out as a no goer often turned out to be something of the extraordinaire, taking her to different levels of experience within the bizarre natures of this world.
Perhaps she was willing to believe Mulder’s irrational theories of un-predictability, but her secure and sceptic upbringing and training held her down to doubt. Or at least this is what she told herself. Simply the impossibility or defiance of the Laws of Physics that were involved in over half the cases, were beyond the ideas of human minds alone.

She shook her head, acknowledging that she too was beyond exhaustion of chewing over thoughts on the case. This time Mulder had dug up case in which he claimed involved Hypnosis and Mind manipulation. But despite his theories, Several self-inflicting murders and other strange killings in themselves required investigation. And of course the FBI, wanting to perform a thorough examination as possible on the crime scenes, gathers together all of the specialists. So how could they resist not calling on Mulder and herself? Not only were they teamed together as partners on the X-files, but Scully was a trained Medical Doctor with a degree in Physics, and Mulder held a Degree in Psychology having been previously assigned to the Violent Crimes Section/Behavioural Sciences Unit as a Profiler.

But despite the intelligence within the FBI, and years of experience, with a case like this one, how could Mulder possibly resist not getting a little side tracked allowing the case to fill his priorities? He was always so predictable. Whenever he got that look in his eye, Scully knew she was heading into deep water, always covering Mulder’s ass for a situation that would evolve. Which is exactly what happened that day.

Scully pulled out the keys to her apartment and after jiggling them several times, she managed to open the door. Taking several strides into the main room, dumping all of her belongings onto the floor and closing the door behind her with a backwards swing of her leg, she stood for a minute thinking how to soothe a days worth of stress. Finally a smile spread across her face at the thought of a nice relaxing bath.

“I heard that.” Mulder smiled, as he listened to Scully’s impatient sigh of relief, waiting for her to thump against the door implicating a sarcastic ‘thank you, like I needed to know that Mulder’ sort of thing.
He had to admit that he agreed with her, it had been one hell of a long day.
But there was something about this case which had drawn him. Not having seen a decent case requiring a hands on physique for a while was one thing. And being tired of re-assignments away from the X-files to crap cases where Field Agents rarely used their trained intelligence to measure the amount of fertillizer consumed by farmers was another. But now, sitting alone in the office beneath the world of the FBI with an X-file in his hands, he admitted that he felt satisfied for the time being. Life seemed to have returned more towards normal than not. And what was more normal than being demanded by Assistant Director Skinner to explain your behaviour and reasons for distraction within the course of a little off task assignment?

Mulder knew he had woken up on the wrong side of bed that morning. And it all began from the moment he woke up, discovering he was late for a meeting with Scully.

Early that Morning

“Mulder…” Scully begun as she saw his flustered appearance walk through the main door of the building.
“Don’t ask. Let’s just say that the neighbours downstairs are filing a complaint against the water damages to their apartments.” Mulder said before she could open her mouth, anticipating that she would be questioning his reasons as to why he arrived late to the meeting with Congress.
“Well what I was going to say was that it’s nice to see you managed to make it, and didn’t get side tracked with a little off the record assignment, but now that you mention it, that waterbed leakage story sounds interesting.” She turned and began walking down the corridor, letting Mulder trail behind her.
“Ok. A hint of advice.” Scully stopped short, taking a seat in the waiting room. “Do Not, I repeat, do not mention the fact that we were not directly investigating the case by the book. And another thing –“
“Scully, listen. We’ve been through this before. And think of all the practise runs we’ve had before. It’s not like this is the first time we’ve had to explain ourselves to Congress or the Board of Directors. Seems as though we’re regular customers. In fact, we should be receiving a discount holders card in the mail soon.”
Scully smiled slightly, dusting off Mulder’s jacket and straightening his tie. After having been shoved off by his hands, insisting that he knew how to dress himself, both Agents were escorted inside the Meeting Room.

Mulder watched Scully compose herself into her serious business form, ready for action, as he let out a nervous breath. His eyes studied each form that sat in front of him, as he was gestured to a seat.
For what seemed like hours of speaking, Mulder was sure he had every person down pat. The man on the far right who wore glasses, seemed to have a habit of tapping his pen on his teeth when in deep thought, and then pushing the rim of his glasses further up his nose when he found a suitable question to ask. Skinner, who was next to him on the right, lay back in his chair, anxiously screwing bits of paper. The woman on his right sat in her chair with an incredibly straight back, feet placed side by side on the floor. He figured she was a no nonsense woman, considering that her top button was done up, her stockings had no rips up the side, and that her white blouse was incredibly bleached that it was almost impossible to look at directly. And then suddenly Mulder needed to go to the bathroom.

Scully couldn’t help but pass a small laugh that turned into a choked cough, when Mulder excused himself to go to the bathroom. But when what should have been ten minutes, turned into an hour and the Board decided to continue through the meeting despite that Mulder hadn’t shown up, it lost it’s humorous touch. Even after it had finished he still hadn’t shown up.
“That was one hell of a pee, but then that’s Mulder for you.” She said to herself, smiling at the fact that he would have more explaining to do. Well, more explaining to a bunch of angry Assistant Directors anyhow.
“Agent Scully, may I have a word with you please?” Scully whirled around to meet the gaze of an Assistant Director, and was about to answer him when her Cell phone rang.
“If you’ll excuse me for a moment.” Was all she said before dashing behind a corner.
“Scully.”
“Scully, It’s me.” Said a familiar voice.
“Mulder? Where are you!” She said in a hushed voice, placing her hands over her ears to block out the noise coming from the offices.
“I’m going to need some help.”
“Are you ever. Here are some words for you. A bunch of angry Assistant Directors who would like some explaining as to why it took you over an hour to pee.”
“Well when you are hand cuffed to the cubicle, you could say it’s going to take longer.”
“How you get yourself into these situations is beyond me.” She sighed, walking towards the male Toilets.
“It’s a long story, but let’s just say that this isn’t a regular thing for me.”
“Are you sure? This isn’t the first time you’ve locked yourself in a room.” She said as she reached the door. “Ok Mulder, I’m at the door. Is it safe for me to come in? Or are you over exposed?” She said, knocking on it.
“Whether I am or not is not the issue here. I wouldn’t mind being let out of these hand cuffs though.” He replied before ending the call.
Scully opened the door, and smiled to see Mulder hand cuffed to the sink next to the cubicles.
“This isn’t something you see every day.” She shook her head. “You really should find a more suitable place to practise these kind of things.” Mulder just jiggled his hands, prompting her to release him
“Well I could just leave you here.” She shrugged, reaching over to unlock him.
“Ah Scully,” He said, rotating his wrists to relief the cramps. “You’re a saviour.” And wrapped her in hug smiling.
“Uh Mulder?” Scully began as she saw another Agent walk in. “Oh.., I’m uh sorry to interrupt you two.” He said stuttering, embarrassed as he quickly walked out.
“Well, there’s another rumour for the Bureau.” Mulder smiled, gesturing Scully as she shook her head smiling. “The things people do these days…-“
“Agents Mulder and Scully.” Assistant Director said in surprise as he watched the two of them exit the toilets.
“I can explain.” Mulder began.
“Well I’m hoping you can, to the Board of Directors, who will be more than willing to hear you out.” Skinner said sternly.
Scully just looked at Mulder who returned her gaze.

“Well I’ve felt lower to say the least.” Mulder breathed as he stepped out of the meeting room.
“That bad huh?” Scully asked, looking at him.
“And just think, I haven’t even made it half way through the day yet.”
“Mulder, they’re only a bunch of Directors who have no life. How many of them have done even half the things we get into trouble for? They just envy our carefree jobs. There are so many Field Agents who would dream of going to the places we go to. Besides, rescuing you from the toilets is far more interesting than lecturing a group of people at Quantico.”
“Wonder how far the rumour of you and me in the toilets has travelled down the grapevine.” Mulder smiled, as he noticed people eyeing Scully and him off.
“Well don’t be surprised if we’re called into Skinner’s office for a little talk about Agents relationships within the office.” Scully reached out and punched the buttons for the elevator.
“Settle for some lunch then?” She suggested before heading into the elevator.
“The last thing I need right now is for anything else to happen to me…” he stopped short as his eyes wondered after a man who walking down the hallway speaking to someone on his cell phone. “Mulder?” Scully nudged him.
“That’s the man who hand cuffed me.” He said as he began walking after him.
“Mulder…” She called out, realising that the man whom Mulder claimed hand cuffed him had noticed the commotion and broken off in a run. Mulder bolted full board after him, dodging people on his way if possible, knocking things over in his path. Papers and books flew to the floor as he dashed through the offices, attempting to chase the man in front of him.
“Catch that man!” He yelled ahead to the people who were excitedly watching the speculation as he bounded over chairs that were in the way.
“Look out!” Some one cried. Mulder turned to see where the call had come from, and realised it was too late as he came hurtling through a water dispencer, sending it crashing down to the ground, spilling water over the floor.
“Sorry!” Was all he could manage as he scrambled towards the exit door down a flight of stairs, still following the man. “Mulder…!” Scully cried out as he passed her in the corridor. “Damnit Mulder!” She began, and took off after him.
He continued down to the next level, until he reached the corridor. “Two choices, and only one of them is right.” Mulder pondered as he looked from one door to the other. Deciding to take the one to his left, noticing it was slightly ajar, he burst through.
“Well one of them was right.” He said silently, as many eyes from around the Meeting Table of Senior Agents fell upon him. “And it wasn’t this one.”

Back to Present time

Mulder sat back in his desk, repeating to himself the events that had happened that day.
“The waterbed leaking, arriving late to a meeting with Congress. Being hand cuffed to the toilets during the meeting, the damages of a chase through an office, barging into a meeting of Senior Agents. The rumours of me with Scully in the toilets..” He smiled. “ and Scully getting mad at me for my lack of explanatory reasons for my behaviour. Just another typical day at the office.” He concluded leaning back in his chair, realising he had leant too far and came crashing backwards. “- and falling off your own chair.” He added.
