Alleghany Roughs in the Great War
Company A, 27th Va. Stonewall Brigade
Known also as Alleghany Light Infantry
and Carpenter's Battery
From Richmond Times-Dispatch
March 12, 1905

Following is an excellent sketch of the career of the "Alleghany Roughs" more generally known as "Carpenter's Battery." It is by William M. McAllister, Esq., its youngest soldier, whose father, its oldest soldier, commanded the Alleghany Roughs during the first year of the war, while they constituted Company A, of the 27th Va. Infantry, of the Stonewall Brigade. It was observed by those who were in front of the charge of the 4th and 27th Infantry on Rickett's Battery, that Captain McAllister and his son went side by side through it's guns when they were captured. Singularly enough, Colonel Robert McAllister, of the 1st New Jersey Regiment, was in position in the Federal army just opposite to these captured guns, and upon his regiment the guns were turned. Colonel Robert McAllister afterwards became a general in the Federal army, and Captain Thomas McAllister, of the Confederate army, was revered and honored as one of the heroes of Henry Hill.
