“The Battle Cry”
Newsletter of Captain Mortimer Jordan Camp #84, Gardendale Alabama Alabama Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans October 2005 Edition Patrick Cumbie: Commander Albert Snow: Adjutant The Capt. Mortimer Jordan Camp met at the Gardendale Shoney’s Restaurant, Tuesday September 2nd at 7pm for its monthly meeting. Commander Cumbie called the meeting to order and asked Adj. Snow to lead the camp in opening prayer followed by the SCV opening and pledges led by Commander Cumbie. Commander Cumbie greeted the members present and also recognized a visitor for the evening Mr. Clarence Downs. This is the third meeting Mr. Downs has been with the camp. Adj. Snow read the minutes of the August meeting, which were accepted with a change to reflect that Mr. Downs was also in attendance as a guest. Old Business: At present the camp has no old or pending business. New Business: It was discussed as to moving the date of the November meeting to clear a conflict with Election Day. The Adj. called the board of registrars and was informed that there would be no election on that day. Since there is no conflict the meeting will be on the first Tuesday (November 1st at 7pm) as usual. The camp also discussed the upcoming Jeff Davis Inaugural Banquet, which is an annual event. While it is still several months away we are already in the planning stages for the event. More news later in the Battle Cry Program: There was no real program for the evening however Adj. Snow brought some thoughts on the recent death of Commander Simmons and his time with us. From his youth Commander Simmons yearned to fly and spent a career doing so. Also in his heart was the love of history. Commander Simmons great collection of Confederate artifacts and weapons was truly a remarkable sight to behold. His knowledge and keen mind was a treasure to all who knew and talked with him. Mr. Clarence Downs presented the camp with an application for membership. As to the rules a committee was formed to consider the application along with his documentation. The Committee was composed of compatriots Echols, Morrow and Cumbie. The Application was approved with the proper signatures affixed to the application. Our congratulations to Compatriot Downs for becoming the newest member of the Captain Mortimer Jordan Camp! After a brief discussion on upcoming events the meeting was closed by Commander Cumbie with the SCV closing and a parting prayer. The next meeting of the Capt Mortimer Jordan Camp will be Tuesday Oct. 4th 7pm at the Gardendale Shoney’s Restaurant. Everyone is welcome to attend. RE-UP NOW TIME IS RUNNING OUT.
