Evaluation Process

Assume you are school principal and have the opportunity to develop your own teacher evaluation system.  Outline the process you will use to evaluate the teachers in your school so that you will have full, factual, objective evidence of the teacher’s performance.  You will need to be selective in the elements of your plan because you will have a limited amount of time to spend with each teacher on your faculty.

The educator evaluation process can cause stress and anxiety for all involved. It is important however, for all parties to understand that evaluations are a necessary part of the teaching process and can be a positive and growing experience.  In my evaluation system, I would establish a clear understanding from the beginning of the school year about what is expected and required in the evaluation process.

Teacher Evaluation System

1. Teacher and assigned administrator would collaborate to create and review the educator’s personal growth plan after appropriate training/understanding of process.
2. At least three goals would be created and evaluated throughout the school year. These goals would come from the areas of classroom management, professionalism, and student achievement.
3. Assigned administrator would conduct one classroom observation each semester for a total of two per school year. The following components would be included:

           a. Pre-Conference
              • Create the three goals with collaboration from both teacher and administrator.
              • Allow for at least sixty minutes and take place during pre-planning before the school year begins.

           b. Mid-Term Conference
              • Review the plan no later than the last week of first semester or first week of second semester.
              • Allow for at least sixty minutes to review progress on goals.

           c. End-of-Year Conference
               • Review and critique the plan jointly.
               • Ratings of needs improvement, meets expectations, or exceeds expectations should be jointly determined for each goal.
               • Narrative summary of at least one paragraph to be written by administrator.
               • Allow for at least sixty minutes and take place before the school year ends.
