Excerpt from EDUL 6023, Assignment 1

1.  Describe the three models in the article.

Mainstreaming generally occurs when a special education student is placed in a regular education class for one or more classes per day. With this type of placement, the student earns the opportunity to be included in the regular education classroom and must demonstrate the ability to complete the work to the satisfaction of the classroom teacher.

Inclusion involves placing the special education student in the regular education class while also bringing needed support services to the student in that classroom. The objective with this model is that the  student benefits from being in the class, but does not necessarily have to keep up with the academic work of classmates.

Full Inclusion places the special education student, regardless of his or her handicapping condition and its severity, into the regular education class full time. All support services are brought to the student.
