Excerpt from EDUL 6024 Capstone Assignment

Ninth Grade Teacher Seminar

For my Capstone assignment, I chose to conduct a professional learning seminar specifically for teachers of ninth grade students. In my school, this population of students has a history of difficulties in transitioning successfully to high school. Many of these students, especially the at-risk learners, are particularly vulnerable to misconduct, and are frequent visitors to the school administration after receiving disciplinary referrals. The goal that I set when I began this assignment was to reach teachers who regularly taught ninth grade students and share with them some strategies that were outlined in the required text for the EDUL 6024 course.

In gathering information for the seminar, I spoke with veteran teachers and asked them to share with me classroom management strategies that they found to work for the ninth grade student population. It was interesting to find that many of the ideas that they had were also written about in the course text. Many of the strategies detailed in the seminar are common sense type ideas, but may be overlooked on a day-to-day basis of running a classroom and trying to teach at the same time.
