DNA Donor Qualification:

Donor must be a non-adopted male that carrys the Lovett/Lovitt (or surname variation) Surname.

THE BIG QUESTION - WHY A MALE???

A male, has 46 chromosomes, only one of which is a Y. The Y chromosome is passed unchanged typically from grandfather to father to son. This Is the reason the Y Chromosome test is valid for mapping surnames.

While a males X chromosome comes from his mother, she could have gotten it from her mother or her father therefore it’s impossible to validate a surname line with the X chromosome.

Preferably, each line should find 2 donors that are 2nd or 3rd cousins for most valid mapping results.

Taking The Test:

The test is mailed to you at your home, and consists of running a small brush/swab along the inside of your cheek.

The initial test run is a 12 marker test that roughly provides a match within 14.5 generations if a match donor already exists.

Allele - Allele is the number of repeats of the short base sequence of the loci tested.

DNA - Deoxyribonucleic acid. The chemical make up of genes and chromosomes.

DYS - A label for a class of genetic markers that are often used in genetic genealogy.

Haplotype - Your Haploytype, is the sequence of numbers that will be provided by the lab on the conclusion of your test. Once it is validated by a test done on a second cousin, when we speak of Haplotypes on this website, we will state that the “Haplotype for the Lancaster Lovett Line is ” -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --“ etc.

Locus - (plural: loci) Is the specific site on your DNA chain that was reviewed.

X Chromosome - one of the two sex-determining chromosomes. An XX Chromosome belongs to a female.

Y Chromosome - one of the two sex-determining chromosomes. An XY is male. The Y chromosome, unlike the others, does not trade DNA with a "partner chromosome," and it therefore passes intact from father to son. This property leads to a minimum of ambiguity in interpreting the results of Y DNA analysis.

2.) The John Lovett lines of AL tested positive for sharing a common ancestor with the David Lovett line of Georgia. If the John Lovett Line and David Lovett line would like to narrow the field and determine about what time frame their common ancestor lived, for $60.00 additional dollars in each line, further testing can be done to narrow that search. (I should note that NO further testing is required it is done on the test you already submitted), BUT you should understand the limitations so if you're interested email me and I'll give you the documentation on going the extra step.
3.) Initial results indicate that the Lancaster Lovett line IS NOT related to John Lovett AL, David Lovett Sr. GA, or Joseph Lovett PA lines. and visa versa.
4.) We have successfully completed 1 line map to date and that is on the David Lovett Line of GA.
5.) Canada Lovett is absolutely not Edward Lovits Son ( 9 step differences).
6.) A 12/12 match occurred between Canada Lovett Line (NC/KY) and Joseph Lovett line PA/NC - I highly recommend the additional money for a 21/21 on this.
7.) There is a 1 step mutation difference at dys 391 between the Benjamin Lovett line NC and the Edom Lovit line of NC/KY, I would recommend a 21/21 on this as well.
8.) The Edom Lovit line and the Lancaster Lovett line are absolutely not related.
9.) The Edom Lovit line and the Joseph Lovett line are absolutely not related.

David Lovett Sr., a planter, was born abt 1750, and died after 1830 in Thomas County, GA. His Wifes name is unknown, but his Childrens names were: David Jr.(1785), James(1787), Moses(1791), Aaron (1793), Joshua(1795). David Jr, was living in Madison Co, FL in 1850 but his will was probated in Decatur Co, GA in 1863. James, lived in Effingham and Twiggs Counties, but died in Barwick, Thomas Co, GA. Moses, no migration information, Aaron, appears to have lived and died in Decatur, GA, and owned property in Lowndes Co, GA. Joshua, married in Effingham County, and died in Brooks Co., GA, but I have no other migration information.

Comments: It appears that the 1st and 2nd generation in this family lived primarily in Georgia in Effingham, Decatur, Thomas, and Brooks Counties. 3rd generation Zachariah born in Thomas Co, GA, (son of David, son of David) was living in Taylor County, Florida in 1831. It is thought that this families ancestors came from England or Scotland but there is no proof of this.

As of 2002, members of this line are scattered all over the United States.

The paternal parentage of Canda Lovett is among many mysteries of this line. It is at least generally accepted that Canada is the Grandson of Edward Lovit of Whitley Co, KY through daughter Celia (if Celia is his biological daughter). DNA testing was done on a female descendent of Permelia Lovett (said to be Celia's sister by a descendent) and her heritage was not indian as some have believed or suspected. It is generally accepted that Canada and brother John grew up in Edward Lovits household regardless of their parentage.

After testing the Canada Lovett line, we have concluded that Edward Lovett of the Edom Lovett line was not a parent to Canada Lovett. We are desparately seeking a member of the John Lovett who is said to be Canada's brother to test to validate that they are truly brothers as family history would indicate.

This line should be called the Edom Lovett Line. Family tradition is still so strong that Edward Lovitt is Edoms father that I'm only making this addition until further DNA testing is conclusive.

Edward Lovit is believed to have been born about 1758 although the location is unknown. Some speculate VA some NC. To date, a will record has not been found on the early Lovett/Lovitt families of Dobbs Co., NC, but based on tax lists and census records we know the Lovetts were very early settlers in the Dobbs Co, NC area. A John Lovett is found on tax records as early as 1765-1769. Edward Lovett Sr., Thomas Lovett and David Lovett can be found in early records of Dobbs Co, NC. It is not known if Edward (b: about 1758) was a son of Edward Lovett Sr., John Lovett, Thomas Lovett or David Lovett. (Note In early records, being listed as "Sr." didn't always mean father and son. Sr. was used at times to denote an older and younger man by the same name).

There has also been a lot of speculation on where this family originated. Some say they are of French origin, some Canadian, and Some English. Nothing has been proven at this time.

On a 1783 Deed, Edward and wife Rachel sold 69 Acres in Dobbs Co., to a James Forehand - it is not known whether this is Edward noted in this line, or Edward Sr.

John Lovitt - 1610 born in England (UK) died in Beverly Essex Co., MA. He married Mary Grant about 1637 in Salem, Essex Co., MA - she was also born in England (UK) and died June 1695 in Beveryly Essex Co., MA.

John was one of 8 admitted inhabitants of Salem July 25,1639. His occupation varied, he was a surveyor, constable and Selectman.

Migration: This family for 3 generations in the 1600's-mid 1700's lived in the Salem/Beverly, Essex Co, MA area. Around the 4th Generation, Joesph, Son of Samuel, Son of John, Son of John is reported to have died on 4-22-1786 in New London Co., CT. Josephs Children, primarily lived in New London Co and Windham Co, areas of CT.

Line F (Tied to line AA)

John Lovett (b.1812 at Rotherhite UK) married Sarah Elizabeth Wallis at St Pancras, Middlesex, on 8th June, 1860. In the Marriage Certificate, he is described as a bricklayer, and his father, William, still described as a labourer. He was then living at Grove St., St Pancras, now a suburb of London. Wife, Sarah Elizabeth was the daughter of John Wallis, storekeeper, also of Grove Street. The 1851 Census tells us that she was born at Chealsea, Middlesex, in 1819.

John and Sarah Elizabeth were a highly mobile couple with his work as a bricklayer. Shortly after their marriage, they moved north to Yorkshire where the first of their four children were born;

- William Wallis Lovett, b. Howden, Yorkshire, on 21 April, 1841, - John Lovett, b. Hull, Yorkshire, on 14 January, 1843, - Ann Wallis Lovett, b. Lambeth, Surrey, June, 1850, d. Kensington, London, 1856, - James Lovett, b. Paddington, London, 11th November, 1852.

The family address given on the birth certificate for James is given as 75 Moscow Road, Paddington.

The 1851 Census finds them living at No. 3 James Place, Paddington, Marylebone, London, and William's occupation is now given as a "fitter of devices." The death certificate for son William Wallis lists his father's occupation as "ironmonger."

On the 13th June, 1859, the oldest son, William Wallis, by now a blacksmoth, married Ann, daughter of William Bonathan, gardener, in the Parish Church of Hammersmith, Middlesex. A son, William Walter, was born in 1860, and a daughter, Annie, in 1864.

To date, the residence of the family has not been located on the 1861 Census. Their mobility has made the search particularly difficult and time consuming. In the mid - 1860s, the three brothers, William Wallis, John, and James, together with William's wife Ann and children William Walter and Annie emigrated to Australia. The death certificates for both William Wallis, and William Walter, tell us that the year was 1866.

William Wallis and his family settled in the Redfern area of Sydney where he worked as a gasfitter. The two bachelor brothers followed the gold rushes to Essington (Native Dog Creek), and later to Wiseman's Creek, just south of Bathurst in N.S.W. John worked as a storekeeper, James as a butcher. Both tried their hand at mining.

John Lovett was born about 1790 in Alabama. (m) Sarah Jay. Their oldest son, John Lovett #2, (b) 1815 in Alabama John #2 (m) Charlotte "Lottie" Pounders Cox. She was also (b) in AL. John #2 & wife migrated to Hickman Co., TN. on or before 1835 based on the fact their 1st child, John Wesley, was born in Hickman Co., TN in August of 1835. 11 more of their 13 children were born in Hickman Co., TN.

Some time between 1851 & 1857 they migrated to Carrol/Boone County, in North West Ark. These dates came from the fact that their 12th child was born in Hickman Co., TN in 1851. Their 13th and last child was born in 1857 in Carroll/Boone Co., AR.

John #2 & wife, "Lottie,"s 6th child was named James Monroe Lovett. James Monroe is the direct ancestor of H. David Lovett, Bill Lovett, & Jim Rogers as well as most of the Lovetts in Carroll Co., Ark and NE OK. Jim Rogers lives in TX near the Louisiana line. Others are in Calif., New Mex., etc. Scattered like most families.

It is thought that Joseph Lovett came to America as an indentured servant. He was on the passenger list of the ship Clementia as Joseph Louvat, this ship docked at Philadelphia. He probably changed his name to keep from being deported as an illegal alien. He was at Batso furnace for about one and a half years, and ran away from this place. Batso furnace placed an ad in the Philadelphia PA newspaper stating that Joseph was 14, and that he was French.

Joseph joined the militia and fought with Washington at the battle of Long Island in August of 1776. Joseph ended up in Guilford Co. NC This is from Revolutionary War records found in that co. Joseph married Sarah Hodgson and they raised their family in this area of NC.

Some of the children eventually migrated to TN, One, Joseph Jr. apparently went to AL after moving to TN. than back to NC before he went to AL. Some of the kids migrated to Western KY and now there are descendants in NC, TN. KY. IL And ARK that we know of.

Lancaster Lovett was born around 1609 according to a deposition made in 1661 in Norfolk, Virginia area. It is not known where he was born but U.K. is assumed. He died in Norfolk, VA area.

All of the first generation decendents were born in Princess Anne Co, VA.

As the lines for the Counties and States changed, some of these Lovetts were recorded in Craven County, NC, and more recently a line was identified in TN in the early 1800's.

1654 Lancaster Lovett, brother-in-law to John Carraway II, was one of signers of a petition to the Lower Norfolk Co. Court for a minister for the area.

Thomas Farnesley Lovett's origins are mysterious. He is thought to have been born around 1745 or 1746 in Virginia but his ancestry is yet to be determined. If John Lovett who is descended from Lancaster Lovett were to be his father, that would tie TFL to the Lancaster line.

Thomas went to South Carolina where he Met Mary Ann Stanley. She was born in 1744 in South Carolina. They were married in 1770 and at some point meved to Screven County, GA.

Their son John Forbes Lovett was born in Screven Co., in 1775. Thomas also had a son and a grandson named Thomas. The original Thomas is said to have been killed in the Revolution in 1778 and his body thrown into the Savannah River. Heyward Meriwether Lovett was born in Augusta, but moved to PA, and his children were born in NY.

Samuel Lovett arrived in Burlington, NJ aboard the Ship "The Kent" on March 31,1677. It is not known for sure where he was born but assumed that he was born in the U.K. Samuel and Mary Stokes Lovett were married in the Devonshire Meeting house in London.

Samuel Lovett was among the one hundred and fifty-one men who signed a petition to the English King, Charles II., for "Concessions" of lands in West Jersey. (A history of "Nova Caesarea," or New Jersey, was published at Burlington, New Jersey, in the year of 1765 by Samual Smith.)

The first through third generation of this family appears to have remained in the Burlington, NJ area while some of the 4th Generation(Jonathan III Line) migrated to Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

Edmond Lovet Line - After migration to the United States, the earliest ancestors settled in or around Bucks County, PA.

This Line appears to be one of the oldest English Quaker families in Bucks county, members of which were prominent in the business, social and political life of Bucks county for nine generations. (ref. Bucks County History Website)

10-16-1685 is the earliest record known to author, was a John Gibbs will Administered on 10-16-1685 in which his son John Gibbs was to live with Edmund Lovet for 2 years after his fathers death. Edmund Lovet was said to have taken the inventory for this will.

William Lovett was born in Washington Co., PA on April 10,1810. I do not have any info on his family of origin except he told the census takers that his father was born in Irealnd and his mother in PA. His wife's name was Phebe but she may have been his 2nd wife. She was born in VA or WVa she said. No maiden name for her. They moved to Missouri in 1957, first to Scotland Co. for about 18 months and then to Polk Co., about 1859. I have his obit. He died in 1897 at the home of his daughter, Viola.,she was married to Hilsman Davis. William said he had fathered 9 children but only 3 were still alive at the time of his passing. I believe his son, Richard was the oldest. Born 1849 probably in PA. His wife's name was Margaret. In the 1870 census, His son, John Ingels Lovett is 19 years old. He married Clementine Hook and had 13 children.

My ggrandfather was James William Lovett, born March 29,1862 in Polk Co., MO He married Mary Elizabeth Renfro and they had 4 children together. On May 15, 1891 he was killed by his own gun in a hunting accident. Mary was pregnant with my grandmother at the time and exactly 2 months later, on July 15, 1891, gave birth to her and named her Willie. So she never knew her own father. A few years later, Mary remarried and her husband became the father of the family and they had a daughter, Sallie. His name was Joe Best.

My grandmother's other 3 siblings were Charles, Walter and Della Lovett. They all lived and died around the Springfield, MO area. Of William's children, the only other names I know were 2 girls, Alzeda and Rosela--who died very young. There may have been a daughter Elizabeth, also. Richard and Margaret had a son named John P. Lovett. He had a son, Dale who died in his 20's, but had a son named Tim. He is still living in the Springfield area and I have been in contact with him. I am hoping he will do the DNA test. His wife told me she thinks William's father could have been named Joseph but she is not sure of that.

Benjamin E. Lovet was born abt. 1774, location and parents unknown, probably VA or NC. Benjamin married Elizabeth Cox, born abt. 1775 in Bladen County, NC, before 1806. A Robeson County, NC. Deed, dated 1806 shows Benjamin received a gift of 200 ac. from Simon Cox, the father of Elizabeth. This was part of an original Land Patient taken by Simon Cox before Robeson County was established from part of Bladen County in 1787. This property was located in an area known as Hog Swamp. Since this gift was made, there has been a Lovet/Lovett/Lovette direct descendent living on part of this property to this date. This community is served by the "Lovett Road" which has been the home of eight generations of Lovetts/Lovettes.

Allen Lovett, of Butler County, Alabama was born in Georgia in 1805. He lived in Marion County, Georgia in 1830. His wife Nancy was born in 1810. their childrens names were: Catherine b:1830, Enoch b: 1832, Joseph b: 1836, Elizabeth b: 1837, Jane b: 1838, Sarah B: 1840, Pierce b: 1842, Penelope b: 1849 and Stephen Isaac Lovett was born 1844, in Alabama. Stephen married Mary Rolison and their children were: Stephen Isaac Lovet (Migration AL/TN), William Pierce Lovett (Migration AL), William Edward Lovett(Migration (AL/GA).

The known migration was AL, later to Knoxville and Jackson, TN., no known alliances with any other lines.

This LOVETTE/LOVETT line is reported to be the French one. It is not connected to any of the other, earlier, LOVETT/LOVET/ LEVIT/LEAVIT lines that came from England.

The original spelling in France was LOVETTE, but due to the mistakes of English-speaking clerks, who knew of a similar name in England, it was written down as LOVET or LOVETT. It wasn't until a descendent of the French family travelled back to the homeland that the spelling was changed back to LOVETTE (with a final "E").

Frances Lovett was born about 1792 in present NC before TN was formed. It is suspected that David Lovett born early 1700's in Princess Anne Co., VA was Frances Father hopefully DNA testing will confirm or deny this. Francis had a son named Joshua b: 1833 in Campbell County, Tennessee, Joshua had a son named Elijah b: 1865 born in Cabria (Macon City) Missouri. Thus the migration of some of these line members were NC/TN/MO.

SEE LINE Z FOR UPDATED INFORMATION ON THIS LINE... Joshua Lovett connection of Cook Co. GA? My grandfather, Lee Crowley, whose paternity is unknown, was born Aug 1865 in the same settlement (Brushy Creek,Cook Co.) where Joshua Lovett lived. Almost certainly just a fluke, but interesting given the proximity of Lovetts to my great grandmother at the crucial moment. Someone queried the value of DNA in genealogy a while back. I think a case such as mine shows its potential value in breaking down "brick walls" like my grandfather's illegitimacy. The paper record gives absolutely no hint as to his paternity. A good match with a family present in the community at the right time would at least give us an idea of the surname and lineage of our anonymous ancestor. Although we do not know our ancestor's name, an 82 year old cousin of mine swears our grandfather said it was "Josh." Of course, there are two uncertainties here: interpreting DNA mismatches and knowing what estimate to put on the recollections of elderly relatives concerning 70 year old conversations.

Reported to have moved from Georgia from North Carolina. Married Elizabeth Unknown b: 1804 in Georgia d: 1857. Joshua was appointed constable of the 275th District of Mongomery County, Georgia in 1829. The family moved to Lowndes County, Georgia in 1840 and settled in the portion of the County that was cut into Berrin County in 1856 and Cook County in 1918. Joshua fought in the Indian War, and was buried in the Brushy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in present Cook County, GA.

The Lovetts of Deptford, Kent 1700 to 1780 The first of this author's Lovett ancestors to emerge, albeit dimly, from the shadows of times past is one, John Lovett who lived at Deptford, North West Kent (now South East London), in the first half of the eighteenth century. Unfortunately we have very little information about him. The parish records of St. Paul's Church of North (Uppertown) Deptford tell us in one single handwritten line that this John Lovett was a soldier who lived at Uppertown and that he was buried on the 21 October, 1750. Details of his birth place, birth date, wife's name, and his regiment remain unknown. We can, however, deduce other reasonably factual information about him from other entries (or absences) in St Paul's parish registers of about his era. Firstly, there are no church records of Lovetts living in Deptford, either in St Paul's, or in its sister parish of St Nicholas of (south) Deptford for over 150 years prior to 1743. This is consistent with the somewhat nomadic life of a professional soldier. Unfortunately, it also acts as an effective barrier for further research into this line of Lovetts. Secondly, there is an avalanche of Lovett birth, death and marriage records for St Paul's in the period 1743 to 1788 after which further records tend to die out. This is the generation of the children and grandchildren of our John Lovett and his, as yet, unknown wife. He had at least two sons, John (Jr.) and Charles. Birth and marriage records for both sons have not yet been located and it would appear that, like their father, neither was a native of Deptford. However, in St Paul's records, John, ancestor of this writer, is variously described as a husbandman (farm labourer) or labourer of Uppertown. His wife was named Elizabeth. Charles is likewise described as a husbandman. His wife was Mary. During the lifetime of our soldier ancestor, Deptford was a strategic village for shipbuilding, repairs and provisioning, located just a few miles downstream from London on the River Thames. During the earlier period of his lifetime, England was constantly at war with France and Spain. Deptford was provided with permanent canon emplacements to defend the village itself and also the approaches to London. We can assume that our earliest known ancestor was associated with these defences. However, the early part of the eighteenth century was a period of peace and relative calm in Europe, and coupled with the beginnings of the industrial revolution which saw growing unemployment, industry at Deptford went into decline and recession. The Lovett families were not immune from its effects. St. Paul's records show us that Charles Lovett and his wife Mary were forced to seek refuge in the Parish Workhouse where their daughter, Elizabeth, was born on 27th July, 1748, only to die there as an infant 20 months later.
