This page is dedicated to the Memory of My Ancestor,
Mary Mullany

I know very little about my Mary Mullany. My g-g-g-grandfather, John Dunn was married to Mary Maguire on November 21, 1844 in the Catholic church in St. Sylvestre, Quebec, Canada. John's parents were Thomas Dunn and Mary Mullany, both of Ireland. I'd like to create a Mullany Online Research Database. If you share this Irish surname, please let me know the information you have and I'll begin a database where we can share our information.

Derivation of the Mullany family name:

Spelling variations of Mullany include: Molony, Maloney, O'Maloney, O'Molony, MacLoughney and many more. First found in county of Clare ~ also in Cavan.

In the Irish language, it is 0'Maoileanaigh. The name means Servant or Follower of St. Eanaigh. Older anglicized forms of this name were O'Mulleena and O'Molina, the latter being perpetuated in the place-name Crossmolina in Co. Mayo. Another place in Co. Sligo, not far from Boyle (Co. Roscommon), is Ballymullany also named from this family. Four brothers, sons of William Ó Macienaigh, were among the poets, ollavs and "men of other arts" who took part in a gathering organized by Rory MacDermot and his wife in 1540 as related in the Annals of Loch Cé. (Loch Cé in Co. Roscommon is now called Lough Key). Their present as well as their ancient habitat is in that area. It is known from Petty's "census" 1659 that O'Mullany was one of the most numerous names in the barony of Boyle, Co. Roscommon. An Irish-born man of some note of this name was Patrick F. Mullany (1847-1893), who was well known in America under the pen-name of "Brother Azarias". Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Eleanor Moloney settled in Boston, Massachusetts. in 1767; Joseph Moloney settled in Pennsylvania in 1772.
