Quisiera comenzar pidiendo disculpas. Durante las últimas semanas no he enfocado bien en la Petición Anual. El día miércoles la Arquidiócesis me notificó que no andamos bien este año. Hasta la fecha solamente 243 familias de nuestra parroquia han respondido con un compromiso o indicando que no van a participar este año. Representa solamente 12% de las 1812 familias registradas. Desde miércoles la cantidad comprometida de Sagrada Familia es $ 38,069.15. Como nuestra meta es $57,459, significa que nos faltan $19,390 para cumplir nuestra responsabilidad.

Para hacer una comparación, la gran mayoría de parroquias en la Arquidiócesis han alcanzado o superado su meta. Estoy consciente que tenemos circunstancias especiales. Estamos en una zona mas pobre y muchas familias están enfrentando dificultades económicas. Varios individuos me han dicho que no pueden hacer un compromiso a la Petición este año. También durante el este año hemos enfocado en la Campaña Capital para responder a los requisitos del mantenimiento de los edificios. En la Campaña muchas familias ya han hecho sacrificios significantes para el futuro de la parroquia.

A pesar de las circunstancias especiales en nuestra parroquia, creo que el problema básico es que no he comunicado a Uds. la importancia de apoya la Petición. La Petición Anual apoya agencias que hacen obras pastorales en nuestro nombre. Apoya sacerdotes y hermanas jubilados y enfermos, una necesidad que todos podemos entender. Tiene una urgencia particular este año a causa del gran numero de seminaristas estudiando para la Arquidiócesis, el mayor número en mas de veinte años. Aquí en Holy Family podemos apreciar esto porque muchos seminaristas han sido parte de nuestra vida parroquial en los últimos años, por el Padre Armando Pérez y el diacono Ed White. Su educación y formación representa un gasto considerable.

El año pasado un total de 443 familias de nuestra parroquia han respondido a la Petición dando un total de $56,138.51. Así hemos superado nuestra meta para 2004-2005. Estoy convencido que podemos alcanzar la meta para 2005-2006 y recibir una devolución para hacer algo para mejorar la seguridad de la parroquia. Sobre todo, podemos aumentar el porcentaje de participantes. Incluyo una lista de los que han respondido a la Petición, llenando un sobre o indicando que no podemos hacer un compromiso ahora, es decir, devolver un sobre con nombre, dirección y “0” en la caja de compromiso. Quisiera agradecer a todos los que han respondido hasta la fecha. Favor revisar la lista para verificar si su nombre está incluido. I would like to begin with an apology. During the past few weeks the Annual Catholic Appeal has fallen off my radar screen. On Wednesday the Archdiocese notified me that we are doing rather poorly. To date only 272 families from our parish have responded either by making a pledge or indicating that this year they will not be participating in the Appeal. This represents only 15% of the total number of 1812 households registered in our parish. As of Wednesday the amount pledged from Holy Family Parish is $38,069.15. Since our parish goal is $57,459, this means we are $19,390 short of that amount.

By way of contrast the great majority of parishes in the Archdiocese already have met or surpassed their goal. I realize we have some special circumstances. We are in a poorer area and many of our families have faced financial difficulties. Different individuals have told me that they are unable to make a pledge to the Appeal this year. Also this past year, we have been focusing on our parish Capital Campaign in order to meet our building and deferred maintenance requirements. Many families have made significant sacrifices in their three year pledge to the Campaign and are not able to give to the Appeal at this time.

In spite of special circumstances in our parish, I feel the basic problem is that I have not communicated to you the importance of participating in the Appeal. As Arabella Corcoro explained in her excellent presentation, the Appeal supports agencies which do important pastoral work, assisting the needy in our name. The Appeal also supports retired and infirm priests and sisters, a need all of us can understand. The Appeal has a particular urgency this year because of the number of seminarians who are studying for the Archdiocese, the highest number in over twenty years. Here at Holy Family we can appreciate this need since so many seminarians have been a part of our parish life over the years. Their education and formation represents a considerable expense.

Last year 443 families from our parish responded to the Appeal giving a total of $56,138.51. This did put us over our goal for 2004-2005. I am convinced that we can meet our goal for 2005-2006 and receive a rebate in order to address some of our security needs here in the parish. Above all, we can increase our percentage of participants. Included is a list of those who have responded to the Appeal, either by making a pledge or by turning in an envelope marked “0”. I want to express my gratitude to all those who took the time to fill out and return their envelope to the parish.
