Last week Sacred Heart Radio of Seattle began broadcasting 24 hours a day. It has excellent Catholic programming. I encourage you to tune to 1050 AM whether in your car or your home. You will find the programs inspirational and helpful for your life.
One of the great strengths of Evangelical Christianity in the United States has been Christian radio. It not only brings converts, but perhaps more important, strengthens Christians in their understanding and commitment to their faith. Let's face it. We are surrounded by a culture which continually undermines faith. Our popular media - television, newspapers, radio, magazines- seldom mention God. And even when they do, it often includes some negative reference to religion. Our young people, if they only have a diet of secular information and entertainment, easily become disillusioned and fall away from their faith.
Catholic radio can help counteract this trend. First and foremost, it can aid each one of us in appreciating the treasures Jesus offers us through his Church. The programs on Sacred Heart radio offer a variety which will appeal to all ages, but with a special emphasis on reaching young people.
Coming back from my retreat in Mission, B.C., there are many important activities here in our parish. We begin Catholic Schools Week. This Sunday's two-bit collection will be for our school scholarship fund. Next weekend Mr. Morissette will be giving a presentation at all Masses. This will be an opportunity to make renewed pledge to our Holy Family Renovation Project.
On Thursday of this week (Feb.1) Fr. Ramon Velasco and I will be available for confessions from 4 to 8 p.m. Fr. Ramon will be in the reconciliation room which offers the option of face-to-face and anonymous (behind the screen) confessions. I will be in the confessional "box" on the west side of the church.
With so many illnesses of the throat this year, many people have asked about St. Blaise blessings. They will take place at the Mass in honor of St. Blaise, February 3, 8 a.m. Also since many may not be able to come on Saturday, we will offer the throat blessing at the First Friday Mass on Feb. 2.
February 2 is the Feast of the Presentation. It falls 40 days after Christmas and marks the day the Blessed Virgin went up to the temple for her Purification, a traditional rite after a woman is recovered from the time of childbirth. It was the day Mary heard the prophecy about a sword piercing her own soul (Lk 2:35). The prophecy referred to her participation in Jesus' saving Passion.
I am so cognizant of Mary's role as I celebrate this weekend the First Anniversary of my mom's death. She loved the Virgin Mary and often gathered us children for the recitation of the Rosary. Please offer a prayer for my mom's eternal rest.
