Catholic in the Eyes of the Church?

To what extent can I reject particular aspects of Church teachings/beliefs (papal infallibility, birth control, purgatory, as examples) and still be considered a Catholic in the eyes of the Church?

Dear Joe,

I think Cardinal Newman said it best. It is not a matter of a complex system, but the simple statement "I believe in the holy Catholic church." Some specific teachings, like the ones you mention, can be most difficult. We gain great spiritual benefit by not avoiding what at first seems to be "hard words." To be a Catholic one must approach them with an open, humble heart, with much prayer and a desire to study.

Have a beautiful Easter! God bless,
