BG George Yao unveils the plaque declaring NAS' new premises officially open.

April '97 witnessed the move of the National Archives of Singapore (NAS) from a building in Hill Street to the old Anglo-Chinese primary school at No. 1 Canning Rise. Indeed, NAS has come a long way from being a small setup in the national library at Stamford Road to what it is today - an archive with a purpose-built repository to store its collection and user-friendly reference room.

On the evening of 30 April 98, NAS celebrated it's 30th anniversary with an outdoor event attended by some 200 government officials, well-wishers, and colleagues of the National Heritage Board. The ceremony began with a touch of class and grandeur with chamber music provided by the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) Chamber Orchestra. Associate Professor Ng Chin Keong, Chairman of the National Archives Board, delivered the welcome address and Guest-of-Honor, Minister BG George Yeo, spoke on the important role played by NAS as a keeper of the nation's past.

After the unveiling of the plaque by Minister BG George Yeo later that night, the celebration took on an informal beat as music from the sixties were played. The cool night breeze plus nostalgia added to the gastronomic delights served hawker-style. As a remembrance of the night, many had their photos taken with a sophisticated camera for future nostalgia.

Gastronomic delights, hawker style...

All in all, it was a night of celebration . . . of looking back at our 30 years of achievement with pride and looking forward to greater challenges ahead! (Cheong-Soh Eng Khim, National Archives of Singapore)
