BACKGROUND ON STYC:

Although Seattle has a small Tibetan community, few youths sharing similar interest of committing themselves to the common struggle for Tibet came together and formed what's known as the the Seattle Tibetan Youth Congress (STYC) chapter which was launched on Octobet 7th, 2001 - 30th founding anniversary of the main TYC in Dharamsala, India.

One of the important tasks of STYC is to continue activism in the struggle for Tibetan freedom, to empower youths to embrace the rich Tibetan culture and identity while also adapting positive values of American culture.

STYC established the Seattle Tibetan Sunday School in Jan. 2002, with an incentive to help promote Tibetan educational and cultural survival in America, and hence the continuity of the national struggle.

STYC participates in cultural festivals/street fairs in order to create awareness of the Tibetan situation and its rich culture and heritage.

It also initiates and organizes different activities such as public demonstration for the observation of March 10th - Tibetan National Uprising Day, co-sponsoring visits to Seattle by former Tibetan political prisoners from Tibet, action campaign to release Tibetan political prisoners of conscience, and to release one of the most important spiritual leader in Tibet, the 11th Pachen Lama who is considered to be the world's youngest political prisoner, and to organize community gatherings to observe Tibetan holidays, which also serve as a means to raise funds to support STYC's ongoing projects.
