HISTORY
Maine began in 1820 as the 23rd state but you already knew that so lets step a little bit further back in time. Indians back in 2500 B.C. A.k.A. the red paint people lived in what is now called Maine. Years Later in 1677, the state Massachusetts acculaly gained control of Maine. But later in 1770 some towns in Maine gained right to send the representatives in Boston to make colony laws. When the British retreated at the end of the 2nd war for independance (the war of 1812), the citizens of Maine were mad with the Massachussttes government for leaving them stranded in a time of need and that the government taxed them unfairly. Then in 1819, The question was put to a vote... "Should Maine be considered a state? The separtists won by a landslide and with approval from congress on March 15, 1820 Maine became the 23rd state of the union. By the early 1900's Maine had become such a popular vacation spot that some people soon worried the land would be spoiled. The 1st big piece of land to be protected was Mt. Desert Island. The craggy headland that forms the back drop for Bar Harbor. The island was named a national monument in 1916 and in 1928 it became the heart of Acadia National Park. One of Maine's biggest challenges may be seeing that its bounty is shared by all.
