Project Profile The purpose of this project is to introduce students to the history of mathematics and to guide them in exploring how math is related to nature and to our every day lives. The students will experiment with numbers through their observations and will identify a famous sequence of numbers discovered in 1202 by the Italian mathematician Fibonacci. After summarizing their findings, the students will post their reports on the web site. Learning Objectives 1.- The student will be able to describe, analyze, and express the generalization of patterns using algebraic expressions. 2.-The student will be able to predict outcomes based on a generalization of a pattern or relationship. 3.-The student will be able to construct and use scale drawings to recreate a given situation. 4.- The student will be able to explore the history of mathematics and the lives of famous mathematicians that contributed to its development. Classroom Management Students that are computer literate will be paired with those students who have less knowledge to assist each other in this project. Students will visit the media center to find Internet materials related to the project. Students will be provided with reading materials, collection of data, and activities to discuss during class time. Assessment The students will be assessed according to their abilities to discuss questions, observations, and findings with other participants. Final reports will be published on the web site. |
