Coloramics manufactures high-quality ceramic glazes, acrylic stains, and molds for the hobby ceramic market. The company produces almost 600 glazes which are fired onto pottery, approximately 400 non-fired acrylic stains which are painted onto bisque (previously fired pottery), and has 900 decorative and functional mold designs. Coloramics also provides tools, brushes, and accessory ceramic products.
Coloramics was formed in late 1997 by the acquisition of two ceramic industry leaders, Mayco Colors, Inc., and Ceramichrome, Inc. Mayco was founded in 1952. Ceramichrome was founded in 1936 and is one of the oldest manufacturers of hobby ceramic glazes in the United States. Although both companies' product lines are similar, each has different strengths.
Mayco is the premier fire-glaze company. Mayco dominates the contemporary studio market with a strong leadership position, and was the first in the industry to recognize this market's specific needs and growth potential. Mayco also has a presence in the school market through products placed in the leading school supply catalogs. Ceramichrome's strength lies in the traditional ceramic hobbyist market. It provides a wide selection of non-fired stains and has creative mold designs. Coloramics retained and built upon the specific market recognition of each brand. Both Mayco and Ceramichrome product lines are manufactured in the Hilliard, Ohio, facility to generate manufacturing synergies and to reduce costs.
Products are sold through a distribution network of approximately 300 distributors worldwide; these distributors sell to ceramic studios, potters' studios, schools, and small commercial accounts. In addition, Coloramics does private-label manufacturing for several other companies in the ceramics industry. Coloramics has a strong position in the hobby ceramic market through competitive pricing strategies and innovating new products. Coloramics is regarded as the industry quality leader and enjoys the reputation of being a company that is customer friendly.
