Basic Principles
To get a better understanding of the deadly techniques of Karate, one must first understand the principles of which the techniques are based on. The mastery of Karate can only be achieved by applying these very important points to every aspect of your training.
Breath Control and Kiai. The body should always be relaxed and alert prior to executing a technique. The only time the muscles should tense is at impact, for the purpose of creating more power. Ocassionally a loud "kiai" or shout should be employed. The kiai should not be a scream, but a deep loud sound genertated from your lower abdomen. and executed to emphasize a technique.
Focus Point. To focus is to concentrate all your power into the target when contact is made. Focus allows karate students to smash bricks or break boards without any injury. Through experience, you'll be amazed at how well you can control your strikes.
Speed is Power. Speed is what gives a small person the ability to hit like a heavyweight. Always strive to improve the speed of your techniques. You will never lack power.
Form. Good form exemplifies the beauty of karate. You can tell the difference between a mediocre performance and an outstanding one by a practioner's form. Profer form can only be achieved by executing all techniques with deep concentration. A good form also increases the effectiveness of a strike.
Timing. An outstanding karate technique is worthless without proper timing. Timing is when you move in your opponent when he loses concentration and he lets his guard down. It is also the ability to know what your opponent will do before he moves. timing is developed by training with different opponents and with experience.
Spirit. Karate is part of an art of imagination. Always imagine that you are fighting an imaginary opponent when training. Only then, you will develop a good spirit which is needed to be victorious in sparring and in self-defense.
Meditation. Meditation helps to eliminate all the thoughts that do not pertain to karate. One should meditate by sitting down with a straight back, eyes closed, and there should not be any movement. Breathing is important too. A good mental image is needed to enhance your physical performance. One should meditate before and after training.
Karate Bow (Rei). The bow is used as a tradition of respect and courtesy. You should always bow towards your training area, to your instructors, and to other students when training. Correct bowing is performed with your feet at 45 degree angle, hands to the side, and always looking up at your opponent.
