SPARRING (KUMITE)
Sparring or Kumite is a way of deciding who has better fighting skills between two students. However, a student who wins today, could lose tomorrow if sparring with the same person. Kumite is about who gets the most points as fast as possible and with very light contact. Students should not be injured when sparring. Traditionally, the japanese had a way of judging their own students techniques, but ever since Sparring became popular in tournaments since the 1950's, judges have come up with new ways of judging the fights. Usually when a student accumulates 3 points, he or she is considered the winner. Black belt fighters usually fight for 2 minutes and during that time, they try to get as many points as possible.
In the old days, a student wore no kind of protection when sparring, but today, protective gear is required for fighting at tournaments to avoid injuries. The following gear is mandatory when sparring and it should be worn at all times when fighting with someone, even if you are training at home with a partner. It is recommended that you protect your body at all times. You only get one.
