He was a nameless street orphan. He joined a gang of other war orphans and made friends with a boy named Solo. Solo died sometime in the past before the child's history began to be recorded, and he took the name Duo "so that Solo would never have to be alone again". The street gang was caught raiding the Alliance food stores, and the Maxwell Church took in the boys until they were adopted. Duo, however, was hard to handle and kept being sent back, so Father Maxwell and Sr. Helen raised him themselves. After a pitched battle where Duo refused to let his hair be cut, Sister Helen compromised by braiding it for him. Duo was delighted since "it won't get in my way when I steal stuff". He lived there quite happily until "freedom fighters" took over the church. When they threatened the priest and nun, Duo offered to steal an MS for them...on the condition that they leave. He returned to find the church destroyed and Sister Helen dying. Three years before the start of Operation Meteor, he was caught aboard the good Professor's shuttle trying to raid the food stores. When called him a "kid", he replied,

"I'm no kid, I'm Duo. Duo Maxwell who may run and hide but never tells a lie!"

G drew the connection and asked after "Maxwell's Demon", to which Duo responded,

"Not just a demon. I'm the God of Death!"

G took him in and trained him as the pilot of Deathscythe. When Duo learned of Operation Meteor, he tried to destroy Scythe, but was stopped by G, who suggested that he "steal" the Gundam and descend to Earth on his own.
