KEITH MOON
Keith is well known for being Premier's best customer but he owned many
different drums in his time. He bought many kits off Premier
because he had a tendency to wear them out pretty quickly, and despite
notoriously destroying their drums in various uncaring ways, the Patent
British Exploding Drummer and the makers of these prized drums became almost
as close as family. Premier were always happy to let Keith try out new drums,
and made him up some really startling personalised kits over the years.
Premier were the staple of course, but Moonie was very fond of mixing
and matching here and there. Ludwig Supra-phonic 400 Snares could often be
found nestling behind his two Premier kick drums, and the odd wooden shell
Gretch could be found hiding amongst the mass of metal shelled Premier drums
that somehow seemed to multiply independently as time went by.
Keith started his drumming career with a good as new Pearl Blue Premier
Kit that he bought on Hire Purchase at Paramount Music on Shaftesbury Avenue
where his friend Gerry Evans worked. A £15 downpayment and a load of forms
signed by his dad that promised he would pay the entire money due within two
years, had Keith and his mate carrying a mass of drum cases home on the
underground to set the kit up in the family front room.
Just before his untimely death, Moonie was considering endorsing a
wilder kit that some think would have suited his image down to the ground,
featuring Staccato's horn shaped drums. Interesting idea, but I'll always
have him down as a Premiere man. And I just have to say I really do *hate*
the way those things
look myself! Surely Keith was a more stylish bloke than that, I mean,
look at these:
Premiere Red Sparkle Kit
* Gretch
* Drum City
