Apgujeong

Seoul's fashion district. Definitely the place to go spend an exorbitant amount of money on stuff you don't really need, but also home to a lot of good bars and clubs. The subway stop (on line #3, the Orange Line) is a bit of a walk from most of these places, though.

Platinum

I rave about the Platinum microbrewery at Gangnam Station, and here you'll find the same beer but a totally different experience. Unlike the Gangnam location, this one has just one seating level, and it's dark and cramped. The beer is superb and you should certainly visit if you're in the neighborhood, but if you're setting out for microbrews, go to the one at Gangnam Station instead.

Sauna International Top Bar

A bit of a hidden gem amongst the boutiques and cafes on Rodeo Drive, but worth looking for. Very small, very dark, and the music is very loud, but it's also a very intimate. The location means that it's not going to be very crowded there most of the time, but if you find it, the guys (and dog) working there will take good care of you. I'm always happy to see a bar that has both Hoegaarden and Samuel Adams, but the price (around $7 a bottle) is the only drawback.

On River Station

Admittedly quite difficult to find and to get to without a car, this restaurant and bar is situated right along the Han River (hence the name, get it?). I suppose the only time of year to go would be during the summer, when you can sit outdoors away from the noise and pollution of the city and enjoy the view and even see stars. Other than the location, the bar does little to differentiate itself from many other Seoul bars (in terms of beer selection and price) but once you go you will probably agree that the location alone makes it worth the trip.

Rock & Roll

Despite being four stories tall, this bar is surprisingly short on places to sit. I suppose that's because the bar area on the first floor is so huge, and the second and third floors are quite small in and of themselves. The place to go, especially in warm weather, is to the roof deck (or "beer garden") on the fourth floor, where you can watch the "beautiful people" of Apgujeong wander by on the streets below. Like many bars in the neighborhood, this one is pretty expensive and loud, but they are usually open quite late. The meager selection of beer and alcohol does not justify the high prices, but it's worth checking out on a Saturday night.
