As I've continued my reading on the occult and wicca/witchcraft I'm left with questions about symbolism. Modern Christians use a cross as the symbol for their religion. Pagans and/or witches use the pentacle, which is a five pointed star surrounded by a circle. The five points represent earth, air, fire, water, and spirit, with the circle representing the continuity of all things, the wheel of the year, etc. I respect both symbols, to each their own. What bothers me about this is other people's reaction to me displaying my symbol of faith (the pentacle). How could it go from a revered symbol of nature, life, and protection to something that supposedly represents evil (the devil)?? I see pentacles all the time, just look at police badges!!! (for examples, see actual badges below). Do people's eyes bug out when they see a policeman's badge like they do when I wear pentacle jewelry or sport my pentacle suncatcher in my car?? I doubt so (unless they were up to no good in the first place!! lol) Any thoughts? |
