The Simple Past Tense or the Present Perfect Tense

If you say when something happened in the past, use the past simple.

Simple past + finished time

I came here (yesterday / last week / in2001 / at 7 o’clock / five minutes ago).

I did my homework yesterday.
We were in Ankara on Saturday.
Why did you leave early last night?
Atatürk lived from 1881 to 1938. He was a great leader.


Use the past simple to ask When ...? or What time ...?

Have they arrived yet?                    Yes, they have.
When did they arrive?                     Half an hour ago.

Is Tom still sleeping?                             No, he’s already got up?
Oh, really. What time did he get up?      At 9 o’clock.

Put the verb in the present perfect or the past simple

Well, it was nearly ten years ago. I went to Antalya with my family. We stayed at some relatives there. And we saw Manavgat, Düden and Kurþunlu waterfalls. They were great.
