Free
Webspace Providers
New free web space providers show up every day, but there are some with staying power. Here is a thumbnail review of those is below. Most offer some kind of email and have some sort of advertising banners.

YahooGeocities:
One of the best, certainly the biggest, it offers 11 meg of web space, FTP and other amenities, including a WYSIWYG site builder.

Crosswinds:
Unlimited space for private use only, is slow in loading.

FortuneCity:
Which always looked as a poor imitation of GeoCities. Fortune City has a reputation for being very slow loading and often unavailable.

Tripod:
A popular site that has worked hard at cleaning up its reputation as the trash dump of the internet and seems to have succeeded.

Xoom:
Another popular site that offers 11 meg of space, FTP upload and a web page generator, it shows through its own frame.

There are others, and others starting. An excellent site for a list and review of the sites is Freewebspace.Net (will open another window, close it to return to this page.)

Which do you think is the best? What is your opinion about them?

Free ISPs
There are several free ISP sources available out there, most with 56K, and some are starting to offer free high speed DSL service. Most are ad sponsored and some require their own interface.

Here are only a few available for the Windows platform with some observations about them.

Address.com
Nationwide access, but no POP email.

Netzero:

Nationwide access, but unstable software not always compatible with older computers. Has POP email.

Freei:
If you like AOL, you'll love the familiarity of Freei. It is nationwide and seems to run very well.

Worldspy:
This is a superior service with no ads displayed and nationwide access. Unfortunately, local access numbers are often busy, and access is difficult to get during peak hours

An excellent service with ratings of ISPs is FreeISPs (will open a new window, close the window to return here)

Portals with affiliated dial-ups:
Most of the major portals, Yahoo (affiliated with KMart's Bluelight), Alta Vista, Lycos, and others have free ISP access with nationwide.

What are your experiences with free ISPs? What do you like or dislike about them? We want to know
