The Missing Book
The Missing Book
It had surprised Robin at first when she noticed a book was missing from her collection. But, being the calm woman that she was, she didn't rampage the ship, Thousand Sunny Go, just to find it. With the belief that it would show up, she took her usual seat in a lawn chair out on deck and read quietly.
The next day, another book disappeared from her shelf and the first had been returned. Picking the book up, she stared at the cover and hoped it would give some clues on who took it. The Secret Lives of Tropical Islands. Vol. 1. She frowned. Only she'd be interested. Damn.
That evening she stayed up and waited to see if any other of her books would go missing, as well as to find the culprit red handed. That night, evening was dead still and she had no visitors.
“Ah! Robin-chan!” Sanji spun around her. “Is she okay?”
Glancing up, Robin gave the cook a serene smile. “Yes, cook-san. I just didn't sleep last night.”
Immediately she was given a cup a coffee, curious doting by a small reindeer, and various other concerned questions from the crew. In reply, she smiled and told them that everything was fine and that she had stayed up late to read a book. There was no reason to get the crew riled up on something so trivial like missing books.
After breakfast, she seated herself on the lawn chair and watched the crew, trying to decide who would touch her books. If they had asked she would have been happy to let them borrow one. Her eyes gazed on the only other person on ship very much interested in books. Chopper.
The little doctor was giggling at Usopp's antics as the pirate told stories of his own adventures on the Grand Line. Outrageous monsters that he single-handedly destroyed. And Chopper was eating it up. But no, she doubted it was the doctor. Chopper was too good natured to steal. He would ask her, especially since they were the best of friends. Noticing he was being watched, the xoan smiled cheerfully. “Hi Robin!” She returned the graceful smile.
Next was Usopp. Genius teenager - that he was. Though his lying was one thing, the boy was overall an okay guy. Like a teen that saw everything against him. But, like Chopper, if he really wanted something he would ask for it in some extravagant way. She marked him off the list.
“The islands in the south are warm-”
Robin glanced over to Zoro. Sleeping. She quickly marked him off. Zoro didn't like her. He was more than likely to burn the book rather than return it for another. She glanced towards the kitchen. Sanji was more interested in her than the books so he also didn't count.
That left Nami, Luffy, and Franky. She laughed at the thought of Luffy taking a book. But why would Nami or Franky take one of her books?
“Paina-purupuru – their heads get really hot-”
Franky was always busy with one thing or another. He didn't seem interested in the history of a town and it wasn't like she had anything about ship building. Nami...Nami was more concerned what the climate of the area was like and if there was gold. Robin sighed. This was getting her no where.
“And they're all idiots!”
Robin let her eyes fall on her captain, who was laying about looking at the water longingly. She wasn't about to claim he did it. She'd been told Luffy and books just didn't go together, and the longer she lived with the crew the more she was starting to agree. “Captain-san.”
Mid sentence, Luffy turned. “Yes, Robin?”
“What are you singing?”
The boy smiled. “A song.”
Robin frowned. “Captain-san.” She tried again.
“Yes, Robin?” Again the captain was forced to stop singing his silly song.
“...Never mind.”
Later that evening, Robin laid out in her bed, pretending to sleep when she heard the door creak open. With her powers, she stared down from the ceiling at who was coming in. Tall. Slender. Big head. And a hat. Luffy? Robin had to stop from jumping up as her books were shifted through and the figure was gone.
This time, laying out on her desk was the book, People of the South with a note attached, “'The islands in the south are warm. Paina-purupuru their heads get really hot. And they're all idiots.' I couldn't prove this true. Your books suck. - Luffy.”
