Raising Rabbits

Raising rabbits requires some skill in animal care. Rabbits are known to be good breeders and keeping track of how many litters have been whelped by a specific female is essential for the health of both the bunnies and the adult female rabbits. A breeding table is often used to track litters and prevent overbreeding, A sample of this follows. rabbit
Breeding Pairs
Gender Name Litters
Male Merlin
Female Bugs Zero
Breeding tables also prevent inbreeding as you can also keep track of which rabbit came from which pair. It is not good for either the adult rabbits or the bunnies to do brother/sister matings as this can cause genetic defects and stillbirths. Another method is to use a program like Excel to track your rabbits. The table below shows a sample bunny listing.

Bunnies
Gender Type Age Mother
Male Angora 4 weeks Patches
Female Angora 6 weeks Bugs

It is very important to seperate males and females after 6 weeks of age as the females may become pregnant. Aside from breeding the type of feed can affect the rabbits health. Commercially prepared pelletted feeds are the norm and can be purchased from local stores or co-ops. Fresh water should always be available and fresh vegatables given. NEVER give a rabbit lettuce, it will cause fatal diarrhea.
