Balanchine's "Theme and Variations" closed the evening in neoclassical splendor. Set to the final movement of Tchaikovsky's Suite No. 3, its episodic bursts of crystalline combinations are a fine test for any corps. San Francisco Ballet's passed with crisp honors. Chung, Rachel Viselli, Elizabeth Miner and Sarah Van Patten made for an engagingly eclectic platoon of soloists.

It takes a true ballerina to make this etched gem sparkle, though, and Lorena Feijoo had mixed results. Never one to lack authority, she freeze- framed bright positions in the air and zipped through the fast footwork with regal command. This work takes immense control, but Feijoo had too much of it, never quite carving the space for generosity of spirit. Her squire, Vadim Solomakha, committed no errors in his famously challenging solo, but never quite came alive./
