However, the Cardassian Union is not completely allied with the Provisional Council, either. A small minority still believe that the Dominion was right, despite the genocide, and a much larger group feels that the Federation-Klingon alliance is detrimental to Cardassian affairs, and that the Cardassian Union needs to reclaim autonomy in order to reclaim its past glory. The presence of these factions has thrown the Cardassian Union into political upheaval, and they remain in a state of constant civil war.
Meanwhile, the Dominion retains its presence in the Breen Confederation, and their alliance is still strong. Over a period of several months, the Breen have launched continuous attacks into both Federation and Cardassian space, intended to destabilize the Cardassian government futher.
The Ferengi Alliance is also in a state of poitical unrest, though to an extent nowhere near as grave as that of the Cardassians. Many Ferengi, angered at the reforms of Grand Nagus Rom, have continued in their old ways, working for anyone who will pay their fees; this usually means the Dominion.
In the middle of all this, in a little portion of Federation space, a lone space station sits; Starbase Elysium. Home to the Starfleet Fighter Defense Force, Elysium is the Federation's first defense against these odds, and any new threats that should appear. Under-supported and over-worked, the Fighter Defense Force is a group of tireless Starfleet personnel with the courage to fight against all odds to defend the Federation.
